My number being used for scam calls?

Over last month I have received 4 phone calls from people who have told me that they had just missed a call from me, now I definitely didn't ring these people so I am just wondering how is my number being used or being shown in the call and do I need to contact my mobile network to report it?

I have always presumed that the ficticious numbers being used by scammers must be real numbers for innocent people. I have tried to call a couple back but never got an answer.

Suppose you could try and contact your provider but I can't imagine they are willing to much about it.

Of course they should be able to ensure that these scammers don't have any access to the phone systems at all!

I had something similar suring the summer, my number was used to plave a fraudulent call, I had to get it blocked. Turned out that they could see the calls in question had not been made from my phone/my SIM, they told me they were sure the scammers had used it to "mask" theirs. The surreal thing (that made me suspicious it could be someone I knew that had set it up) was that they used it to call a close relative who would have known it was mine right away. They pretended to be her daughter calling from A&E about an emergency (I've got C19, they want to intubate me, come quick, etc). Thankfully it didn't work.
