Chicken breast defrosted and in fridge 2 days, ok?

Hopefully this is the best place for this question.

I got some chicken breasts and am pretty sure I froze the 2 (out of the 3 in the pack) that I didn't use on the day of purchase, this was maybe thur/fri.

I removed one from the freezer and put in the regular fridge yesterday morning for dinner that night. Ended up having to spend the day with my sick mother.

Will it be safe for tonight? I always grill them really well?

If it had time left on use by before it was frozen and then defrosted, kept in fridge I'd have no problem using it as normal.

Thanks, I'll do the sniff test. Unfortunately I binned the package so don't know the use by date. I always grab from the back of the frezzer in the shop so assume it had a good few days on it.

Food doesn’t go off on its expiry date. It’s just a guideline.

OP, it would not be in your best interest to follow any of the advice you’ve received to date.

Well, that’s unless you’d like to be quite sick.

"Best before" is a guidline, "Use by" means do not consume after that date.

Why is that exactly - I always freeze meat/poultry with days to spare on the use by date and usually will eat on same day I defrost but on many occasions its the next day - its never made me or my family sick.

Perhaps share the science/food hygiene reason - OP said it defrosted in the fridge and stayed there since, so it has never been at 'room temperatures'

i am speaking generally that some of the advice given here is very poor.

I will not offer any food safety advice as it contravenes the charter here. Besides that I have not been near the food in question so I couldn’t offer an opinion.

No it wasn't, you were confusing 'best before date' and 'expiry date'. They're not the same and I'd recommend you familiarise yourself with the difference.

Hi, OP here. Wow sorry didn't mean to start such a contentious thread. I am going to smell it and if ANY doubt I'll bin it, just hate to waste food and I already binned some meat this week for the same reason.

https://ask.usda.gov/s/article/How-long-can-meat-and-poultry-remain-in-the-refrigerator-once-thawed says:

While foods are in the process of thawing in the refrigerator (40 °F or less), they remain safe. After thawing, use ground meats, poultry, and fish within one or two additional days,

I have a thermometer in the fridge showing 4 dec c (39.2f)

Oh I've done that loads of times.

Once it smells ok, I'd use it. Make sure you cook thoroughly and to the required temperature.
