How often do you change the blade in your safety razor or shavette?

I used to use mach 3's but tried a safety razor off aliexpress recently.

I use Feather Ultra Sharp blades.

It will literally change your life, absolutely no comparison for the close, well defined shave.

However, whilst using a shavette to shape facial hair around the chin etc., I've found with safety razor, the blade seems to dull quite quickly.

Ees normaal?

Anyone use these and how often do you switch out the blades?

I use Feather blades in a Feather Stainless razor and I get about four or so faultless shaves from one... more are possible.

I use a battery electric trimmer to define the edge of the small chin beard and the Feather razor to tidy up remaining stubble.

I have a couple of straights that I never bother with anymore and never used a shavette. However I think that most of the commonly available shavette blades like the Derby are pretty basic quality as I think they are basically half the equivalent DE blade with which I wasn't impressed when I tried them years ago - one shave maybe?

Have you tried snapping a feather blade in half? I think its possible with care.

Yeah for sure, that's what I use in the shavette.

Same deal -- safety razor for the main shave, trimmer to get the right length, then definition use the shavette (which is basically the same as as straight razor except with a replaceable blade - I used a half of the feather).

But yeah, about 4 shaves before the blades start to dull?

Shaving is kind of expensive I guess.

NO, this is it in the link below. Expensive but will still be good in 100 or 200 years years. Get the Feather DE blades for it also.

Also I find that a Simpsons brush is cheapest in the long run and Mitchells Wook Fat shaving soap is the best.

The Feather blades are about 30p each and you will get three flawless full face shaves from one.

I suppose since they are ultra sharp they will lose performance quickly on beard stubble.

Does a brush and the type of soap make much difference?

I use normal shave foam from Tesco or Aldi, and King Of Shaves clear gel for doing around the chin so I can see what NOT to shave.

It makes a world of difference …both in shaving effectiveness and shopping fever 🤒

You can end up with a dozen soaps, creams and sticks, a half dozen brushes, a few razors, lots of pre shaves, post shave balms, aftershaves… and then it gets worse when you decide to try a shave to or cutthroat, maybe vintage Gillette’s, fancy stands and mugs and bowls…

All very satisfying and enjoyable but, unless you stick with the open razor, sunlight soap hardship you will eventually end up with the Feather / Simpson / Mitchell combo and a drawer full of other stuff…and then there are aftershaves… did I mention aftershaves 🤔😳😜

I always found the Gillette yellows were decent and would get a few decent shaves. All down to your own beard hair tho.

What's prices for blades like these days? I remember 100 derbys were like €5 from turkey, even a couple decent shaves it was worth it. Used get 100 feathers from Japan for like €22 delivered one times. I'd say maybe around 2015

Only use a hair clippers to trim the beard to 0 setting twice a week now as I'm bald and shave the head.

Ironically the cart razor is best. Wilkinson Sword Xtreme cause the head can bend in a u shape effortless. I remember trying to head shave with a merkur before I got rid of all the gear, oh Lordie 😭

Stop Rosahane, I remember I ended up filling one of those big plastic tubs with razors, creams, blades and brushes, etc I don't know wtf came over me but binned the lot instead of trying to sell on, jesus I even should have given them away to someone on here for free. A big regret. Id say 100s of euro wasted. Had a Merkur Futur, some of those old Gillette ones I got from ebay, Muhle 41s
