Was 600, get application in quickly (can be done online). You don't even need to own an EV but you do need to specify make if charger you intend installing. If you get application approved before end of year you have 6 months to get work completed. It costs nothing to get grant approval, you need the mprn number from an esb bill.

Installation companies will be reluctant to get off that gravy train they have been on for a while. I doubt prices will drop in the short to medium term.

In fairness to them, €1150 or so for supply and fit of a charger, certification etc is not high. Take account of travel, insurance, materials, labour, over heads.

If only it was just €1150. There's usually some unavoidable ad-on somewhere along the way. All of the people I know who got chargers in the past 6 to 9 months paid €1300 or thereabouts for theirs.

I understand that there are business costs but every time there is a grant or tax subsidy in this country, the corresponding service or product goes up accordingly. Property, home improvements, bicycles and anything the government gives money to assist tax payers to purchase, gets absorbed.

Anyway, that is a discussion for another day. :)

I’ve always used companies that were open and honest up front about their charging.

And no additional charges thankfully. Carcharger.ie was one of them.

You can get EV charge points for €250 wholesale and they only take one man a few hours to install. I bought mine online and had it installed by an electrical company and it only cost about €700 or so all in. They had to add a priority switch to certify it and I got the €600 grant bringing my cost to just €100.

Of course all businesses can charge what they like but I’d imagine supply & fit prices would be a lot lower if there was no grant.

Ohh I know. I bought a few QUBEV units from EVOnestop for €230. Fitted by a RECI mate.

I’ve also bought second hand and got full grant back on other houses making profit like yourself 👍

Off topic but better to get installer to source as they may get discount. Also you may need load sensing model or model that satisfies grant and if you buy yourself it may not be grant approved. There is a different thread for home charger installers, dozens of options, shop around, get quotes, prices vary,you have 6 months.

Yeah if you want to pay €1,200+ you should get someone to supply & fit. But if you want to half the cost then buying second hand or direct from China is the best way to do it. Obviously theres more effort required this way so it depends on how much you value your time.

Can someone confirm if the grant covers Tesla wall chargers?

According to the SEAI (via the chat function on their website) it does not as the charger is not on their list.

Also there is no way to manually add it to the online application :(

As an aside, are the Chinese chargers CE marked and can they be installed here and certified by a RECI? Genuine question?

The one you linked above was €1,135? And that doesn’t include isolation switches for electric showers etc.

All chargers are made in China regardless, so you just have to find one thats CE marked. Theres loads on Alibaba for example.

Most chargers don’t need priority switches as they have load balancing

Sorry I meant priority switch not isolation switch.

Priority switches are needed to give priority to the electric shower when both of them try come on at the same time, otherwise the power will trip.

And yeah I thought isolation switches were required for all chargers if you want it to be certified, it wasn’t a requirement a few years ago tho.

Yeah I was talking pre grant. So net cost of supply & fit job is €535 in that case. Whereas net cost of sourcing your own charger and having an electrician fit it could be close to net €0. At least it was when I got mine fitted. Maybe times have changed.

I have RECI mates. They’ve done mine in the past. I’ve bought new from Amazon, EVOnestop and second hand from adverts etc over the years.

Oh no, so what I did was I sourced my own charger and found a RECI electrician to install it and sign it off. I think he did it for me cash in hand to keep the cost down but he still signed it off for me. I avoided companies that specialised in EV chargers because I found they were over priced. A standard RECI electrician should only charge a few hours labour to install a charger.

I done similar. Paid €200 for an ABL charger on FB and gave my mate €100 for certification. I had the cable and RCBO done during the renovations. For €600 back 💶

I then got the chance of a Tesla charger for €80 so sold the ABL for €250 on adverts. I swapped them out myself.

That died on my this year though, and got a Zappi for €200 and swapped that out.

Are you locked down to the charger make you choose - or is there scope to change it after the application is approved?

Solar PV grant. is also dropping, from a max of 2,400 in 2023, to a max of 2,100 from 1st January 2024, reducing by €300, and reducing further, in future years.

As far as i know, the vat exemption, on solar PV installations, which was brought in earlier this year, is unchanged.

I installed a different charger from what was in the initial application. Grant application was processed with no problems at all. I had checked with the electrician before installing and he said there was no problem changing. I guess its there to make sure people install an "approved" charger.

I'm going to apply for this as I think that I will buy a Tesla M3 in the new year.

I've never had an EV (or a charger). I propose to put Zappi down as they seem to be recommended but will it matter if I change brands when the time comes?
