Penalty Points and the Guards

Hey Folks,

A friend of mine received a penalty points notice along with a fixed charge for speeding. Was 85km in an 80 zone.

If he pays it then three points are applied to his licence.

The thing is, because he lives in Scotland he's been told through the grapevine that if he doesn't pay it then no points are applied. The reason been that because his address is overseas the there's no way of applying the points. Sounds rather hard to believe.

Just wondering if anyone came across a similar situation?

If he has a UK licence then he can't get the points AFAIK.

Points will be applied to a "virtual" licence here for if he ever gets an Irish licence.

They will apply the points to an Irish Driving Record if your licence address is not in Ireland.

From memory I think how this works is explained on the RSA website and on the letter they send out.

The points expire three years after they are applied.

Happened to me a few years ago, I was stopped by a Guard it wasn't a speed van.

Then they will apply the points to it. He can't have an Irish licence without an address in the state.

If they have an Irish licence, it must be registered to an irish address, parents perhaps?

They will get fine and points applied to Irish licence, then "someone" will try to collect the fine from the registered Irish address. If this is parents, and one of the parents are unfortunate eneough to have named said child after them selves, then parent might have interesting encounter with the sherrif, that might get shild removed from the will..

I don't know if that's the case @Miscreant. Or maybe I just got lucky.

Fined for speeding in July on UK licence, No points on UK licence. Changed UK licence to Irish licence as I relocated to Ireland in August.

New Irish licence arrived this week- no points, (as far as I can see anyway}

Well not quite true.

Unless you meant cant apply for one unless you have an address in Ireland.

People move address and Irish licences are valid in EU, Swiss+ and UK for 5 years
