Undercover ops to catch the perpetrators

Maybe they're doing it anyway but...

Couldn't the cops just subscribe to all the nutkob pages and attend any meetings of said nuts, ergo make some arrests?

I'm oversimplifying but surely these gimps at the root of this are catchable

The gardai have infiltrated most of the Telegram apps and the like. The problem is that most users are anonymous on them and the services are privacy focused.

The apps are used for intelligence purposes in order to predict where regular protests, lightning protests will arise and numbers.

Lightning protests are difficult to police since the necessary numbers of guards will not be immediately available - it takes a few hours minimum to get the bodies in place.

I'd imagine inciting a crowd to smash up buses trams and shops that have foreign looking staff is a fairly arrestable offence. A cop witnessing it would make convictions pretty likely

There is a very simple and VERY cost effective solution - namely as follows :- set up ,say six instant response units drawn from the army and base them near expected flash points eg cities. They should respond even quicker than fire brigade personnel and might be at the ‘scene’ before the perpretators arrive if they/ the garda have an adequate intelligence gathering network. There is a precedence in that there was a time when the banks were moving money around the army was used to escort same. The army has also been used when there was major flooding in parts of the Shannon catchment area. So it cannot use the excuse that it is only instituted to protect the state from outside ‘ interference’ and keep the peace in other countries

The only constraint I can think if is that the Garda will argue that it is their job and that it should be resourced to do it. The army is substantially trained for addressing the ‘ activity’ in Parnell Sq the other day And it specialises in keeping the peace between ‘ warring parties

The above completely avoids the sutra cost of hiring extra personnel and all that goes with it

The above units would act- for obvious reasons- as undercover as is possible and they should be on the move most of the time so that any group would not know where they are based and therefor might think twice

There are several undercover units, I know one lad who is doing it countrywide for over twenty years, most of his work nowadays is surveillance of foreign criminal gangs who have based themselves here, he looks forward to days when he's covering the activities of our ethnic lads, some of there carry-on is hilarious, he's well able to hide his identity, driving all sorts of cars, vans, and a few motorbikes

The army are trained to kill others, the gardai are trained to de-escalate and negotiate. The army are the wrong response unless we want to mass shoot the public.

There are always undercover gardai in city centre but it's difficult for 1 or 2 gardai in plain clothes to arrest a mob where they are clearly outnumbered and possibly the only tool they have is a handgun. In the past during scuffles hand guns have been taken from gardai. Ideally you don't draw the gun unless you intend to shoot it fairly soon.

We have rapid response armed gardai and unarmed gardai but responses to large groups are probably even larger groups of gardai with riot shields and vans empty close by to fill up with trouble makers. You probably need 10-20 garda minimum to safely take on a crowd of youths. Even armed gardai do not enter certain areas unless they have multiple units and a clear plan of what they are doing.

Remember some of those arrested were carrying knives, even with full riot gear a knife can do serious damage in seconds.

I think you are dangerously over simplifying it. I mean, what is a 'nutkob' in your view? In the state's view? Is it some group espousing rioting or some group organising a protest or some group organising a response to some new government policy? Or what? Is it fixed what they should infiltrate or would you propose just moving the goalposts to whatever the state deems against it? Bit of a slippery slope there man!
