Seems there's been a few of these lately! Might be a sign of the times....

Anyway, here's the most recent one. Basically, buying a licence now (and paying any arrears due) won't actually halt proceedings, but depending on the Judge, should be enough to see you avoid a fine -

Hard to believe we still take people to court over tv licenses, there must be a better way to manage it. Not having a current tv license seems a very minor offence yet our archaic system continues to use valuable resources eg tv license inspectors, people to issue summons/fines and other paperwork, court services, judges time and the prison service to chase and prosecute people for something that costs three euros a week. Surely all those smart folk in government could come up with some other way to collect three euros a week? Imo we have more serious issues for the courts to worry about.

One option is to raise everyone's taxes by 3€/wk (The Norwegian Model). Another would be to move to a fixed household tax (The German Model). With either approach they end up paying for it whether they want to or not.

The TV Licence as a concept is outdated, and with even RTE looking at moving to DVB-I in the future, they acknowledge that folks won't necessarily consume TV content via a Television anymore but the likes of RTE Player and OTT apps from other providers. A move to either general taxation funding a household charge or some combination of that and end-user-pays might be a more fair approach.
