Any cycling front & rear camera recommendations

After either a good helmet or mounted camera with loop record and greater than 2hrs battery.

what are people thoughts on rear post cameras, do the not get dirty & and obstructed?

Thanks, Seen that one, the bag and large battery are a big put off tbh bu would be interesting to hear thoughts on anyone that has one. Silly they don’t have their own battery and just a connecting wire.

Got chatting with a lad at traffic lights you had one of these on his helmet and gave it a good review. Advised if getting a camera to try get both front and back. He had it side mounted to his helmet which I'd be a bit apprehensive about in case the bike went from under you in ice, oil or something more malicious. Mounted on top of the helmet would be better in terms of safety but that bit more obvious. Guess it should be possible to bike mount it also.

Have been thinking of a camera for ages and nothing really ticks all the boxes, fly 6 & 12 look good and inconspicuous but pricey. The ghost drift x is tempting with the long battery as a rear camera at least:

The only thing about a camera on the helmet is if your head is turned to look at traffic etc it might not catch what you want it to catch. I'd prefer something fixed in place.

The Fly 6 & 12 are both quite expensive but do record in high quality.

The Fly 6 & 12 can both operate as decent lights.

I would be curious to know if the Magicshine alternative to the Fly6 is worth getting.

Thanks for the comments, I’ve a mid to high end racing bike and mudguards are difficult. Take the rear off a good bit to go on zwift also. Guy on YT recommended the techalogic camera also.

Well signed up to see - my original fly 12 seems to have finally packed up (I changed the battery that got me another 6 months out of it). But it is heavy so 40% lighter would be no bad thing!

Had a fly 6, all versions, for several years. Great piece of kit, when it works, but every single one had issues with water ingress, granted, hands up one was due to me not closing the charging port properly but the rest I was absolutely anal about closing it. In fairness their warranty replacement was smooth enough, but when the last one gave up the ghost it was out of warranty. Didn't find them great to deal with on that occasion when asking for any help trying to fix/repair it and decided to look elsewhere. I went with a Garmin 715RCT instead, the DC Rainmaker review will put you off but bear in mind his negatives are mostly based around the app connectivity. If you connect via USB cable downloading footage is easy, and the way I look at it this is a 'worst case scenario' application so I never envisage downloading footage regularly. Have to say the radar function on the RCT 715 is an absolute game changer and I'd never go back to a Fly.

Had the Fly 12 years ago but found it far too clunky and heavy. Use a Gopro hero 4 for commuting purposes now, does the job fine.

A question: if camera is mounted on the bike, is there a lot of shake / vibration on the image recorded? Do the good (ie expensive!) cameras have stabilising software? Would a camera on the helmet be more stable?

I get that the camera on helmet option might not always be looking in the right direction ....

I know that the Cycliq cameras (fly6 &12) have image stabilising. Don't know about the other cameras out there.

Go Pro stabilization is incredible. A helmet will be more steady and will look where you want it to.

A 360 camera on your helmet covers everything but now you have something that can hook things easily.

I just use a handlebar and saddle mounted one and hope it covers enough but when I used a helmet one it caught almost everything.

I have the fly 6 and the software definitely gets rid of most of the vibrations. Mine is an older version with the velcro strap to hold it in place and I find it often migrates around the seat post if I forget to pack it with a bit of old inner tube first. Not had any issues with water ingress

My Fly 6 and 12 in January 2020 cost 498.00 with a discount of 190 so ended up costing around 318 which wasn't too bad, dunno if they still do such discounts in December/January.

I used the DC1, camera quality was decent, and it was handy having front and rear working all on one device. Audio quality was quite poor. They weren't shipping to EU last time I asked, so I had to get a family member to bring it over.

This is a double edged sword. In many situations, you want to camera to see what you see, so having it following your eyes is an advantage too.

Yeah, it can be but I'm perfectly happy with by Fly 6 & 12 pointing front and rear. They've captured whatever dangerous driving I've needed them to in the past, have been reliable and are also great bike lights.

The general consensus is the best consumer 360 cameras are by a company called Insta360. They have an excellent phone app so you wound't usually have to hook their camera up to your laptop to view footage. The main line of their cameras (X2 & X3) are candybar shaped though which I wouldn't feel comfortable strapping to my helmet. They also have a model called the One RS which is go-pro shaped. Some of the earlier models were prone to overheating so not ideal for long commutes.

Thanks, How about producing outputs from Insta360? I've seen the stuff from Vine and Righttobikeit. Do you have to process it through a laptop to produce outputs like theirs (ignoring all Vine's special effects stuff, just the cycling footage).

No, for the X3 you use the phone app to connect to the camera via wifi, build the footage you want from whatever clips are there and the app processes the footage and downloads it to your phone. From there you can upload it to where ever you want. The phone app does everything you need, no need to go near the laptop.
