Can't get to refit my Mirror Backing Plate

I broke my mirror and got the a replacement glass.

My problem is that I can't get the backing plate to refit on the adjustment assembly. The clamps on the backing plate should clip over the rim on the adjustment assembly but it is so tight that I can't get on. Obviously, I don't want to break the glass, but I have been pushing harder than I really felt safe doing. I have tried putting washing up liquid on it, and warming both parts, but I still can't get it fitted.

Just wondering if anyone has any bright ideas 🤔

Usually mirrors are a pain to get back on and some require a serious amount of force. Palm of your hand on the centre of the glass so it doesnt break and a bit of vaseline around the clip on the glass usually does the trick.

Thanks Hellrazer, I was afraid to try Vaseline just in case it might help to come out as well as back in. I'll try it with the palm in the centre and just hope 🙏.
