Fixing battens

I’m looking at fixing 2x1.5 battens too a block wall.

plugs & screws won’t work.

any idea what would work ?

What sort of weight/load?

2x1.5 Inches?

I was going to suggest express nails too depending on weight / load. are they just to attach cladding / paneling or something to?

Don’t think they would be heavy enough and would want a very good strong fixing.

If the end of the batten is resting on the ground or dome other firm base, then the vertical load will be taken care of.

I am renovating a house where double slabbed ceilings were held up with simple nails.

You can get any sized screws and plugs for any need and you will need a good fixing for anything that you are using to attach to a wall.

Everything into a concrete wall (ignoring chemical anchors) works by the fixing essentially getting stuck into a hole in the wall.

The screw is either screwing into the concrete itself or into the plug which itself gets stuck when the screw is in place, depending on what you use.

A nail/express is forced in so it cant come out, a bolt expands to stick itself.

It might seem harsh to say, but if you are struggling to use a plug to fix a batten to a wall I would suggest that boarding/taping/skimming is probably way out of your reach.

Express nails or concrete screws (tapcon) would be my preference, masonry nails are fine for skirting and light fixing jobs. Screws and plugs are good too but are slower than the first two options.

I get you but I want a decent fixing.

screws and plugs for small stuff is fine in my opinion but would need decent heavy fixing with express anchors will be the best bet (time will tell).

Ah sure look it’s interesting giving a bit of DIY a go and hopefully I’ll get it done right.

if not I can always get a tradesman in too finish it off it needed (hopefully not ).

tldw: at least 150kg from a single plug, so stronger than the batten you're using.

The most important things with fixing is proper technique, not the product. The hole in the block must be the right size and clean.

Easy to use - line up batten, drill through batten and into wall. Stick the fixing through and hammer and/or screw tighten. Do one each end etc and then mid points as desired.

As others have said, I think you are under estimating the strength of the simple plug and screw. Just because some people use them to hold up photos doesn't mean they cant (and do!) hold way more than that.

3 red rawl plugs per batten would hold up anything you can possibly imagine and be far stronger than the batten or the plasterboard themselves.
