Plug in hybrid estate options

Hi all,

Currently driving a Kia Ceed Sportwagon plug in hybrid which is up for renewal after Christmas.

It's fine if a little unexciting.

All the brands seem obsessed with SUV's which we don't really like or see the point of.

Our top priority is a large estate type boot suitable for 2 large dogs, bicycle etc, not necessarily at the same time. Even some of the larger SUV has surprisingly small boots.

The plug in suits us as it gets me to work and back all week on the EV and can do what we like at the weekend. Not mad about full EV as we might go abroad thee odd time and planning charging is a PITA.

Any suggestions?

The Peugeot 508 Estate is available as a PHEV but it’s quite a bit upmarket from a Kia Ceed.

Have a BMW 330s Touring - fantastic to drive. Get about 50km in summer on electric only, about 33-36 km in winner. Boot space a little compromised - but has not impacted me in two years

Not quiet a estate. The ford Kuga. Has a decent boot. Bigger than the 2015 deisel version I had. Plenty of headroom. Family is 6'3 with no complaints

The Passat GTE is an option. But seems rare and expensive. I wonder are some of these Japanese imports.

I have seen those on Japanese auction sites, rare and expensive, not much of a saving when importing them, the give away on Japanese phevs are type 1 sockets.

The only brands I can think of not mentioned so far is Mercedes and Skoda and I am not sure if Skoda still have a phev option.

Most Passat GTE’s came from the UK. They are decent value

The next generation Passat Estate has a new plug-in hybrid powertrain with a claimed 100km+ of range. Sounds like it might suit you, should be available to order by end of year.

19.7kWh battery is almost double the size of the one used in the Passat GTE. As a result, the expected zero-emission range has grown to 62 miles. VW will offer the eHybrid powertrain with to power outputs: 204PS and 272PS. Both variants will be capable of 11kW AC charging and will also support 50kW rapid charging.

Its nice to see the next generation of phevs with bigger batteries, as is, the current size suits me for my daily needs, plug in again once or twice during the week takes care of most of my other trips, I put 40euro into the tank at the weekend, just to stop the thing beeping on what was left over from a 320km airport run 2 months ago.

I cannot find anything on useable battery, its probably around 17 kwh, I would imagine 80 km would be easily achieved.

The rapid charging would be handy for people with small bladders or those who suffer from excessive tiredness, stop, plug in, order a coffee, go for a pee and on you go.

That's looks great. I wish they'd put it in a mpv like the Touran. But mpvs are going extinct. So unlikely.

New Kodiaq will have a similar PHEV drivetrain available, likely to be a lot more popular than a Passat estate.

Yeah absolutely. Loads of Kodiac's and Enyaq's where I am. Nice vehicle. Just feels wrong to replace a MPV with more interior space for a large SUV for privately short local suburban use.

But it's nice to see them improving the phev. Suits some better than a bev.

Always buy a Toyota. You are guaranteed that it wont rip off for 20 years, even one feature. All the other companies rip off after 70k- 80k kms.

OP, there's also Octavia and Superb PHEV estates, although a little harder to find over the diesel and petrols.

The next generation Skoda Superb which was just revealed yesterday will have a PHEV estate not sure about the current one but if it does now is a great time to check it out @OP as you can say you know there is a new model coming and maybe get a great deal the same with the Skoda Octavia if the Superb is too big for ye.

I wouldn’t call it nonsense. Toyota are the most reliable cars on the road. Will never let you down unlike VW products.

Any car can have issues. But statistically Toyota are one of the better brands for reliability. They make 9 million cars a year. Are you expecting none of them will have issues.

Its just a saying. No need to get pissy about it. I don’t completely agree with the original post, but generally speaking VW’s will start to give some issues once out of the warranty period, unlike Toyotas which generally do not require as much maintenance.

Speak to one of the many Prius taxi drivers with close to a million km on their cars. A VW group car will usually have went through two engines at that point

Anyway, this is not really helping OP, so I’l leave it at that.

There's a Superb Estate PHEV which is massive. But feels like a lot more space for your money than a SUV.
