Driving Test - Waiting 1+ year

    Hi there

My gf is awaiting a driving test since last October. She rang them a few months ago and they said she should change her driving test centre to Killester as the waiting time is much less than Raheny. She has still not gotten a driving test and the portal is saying she wont have an invitation to book until February 2024.

That message about when she will get invited has been pushed back every single time. It was initially February this year.

Is there anything that can be done to get the test sooner?

    Thanks

Ring again and see if they can do anything. That or change test centre. Mine had been pushed back and back from Feb, test done in past few weeks in Tallaght. The number of testers per centre is lower than the required amount needed to clear the backlog. Testers being trained up is being done, but you cant just throw a bunch of new testers at it without the required training.

yes, ring RSA and ask for (any) other location with a shorter list.

My yound lad ended up going to Roscommon as his IBT (same EDT in cars) was within a week of running out after 2 years, and you can't renew it.

Tbh, if you're waiting more than 'x' time you should be allowed take your test via any ADI.

I didnt realise there was a time limit on your EDT.

We did ring recently, kept getting cut off, and the voicemail says that agents cant help with bookings/cancellations.

Afraid to change again tbh in case we get put to back of the list which seems to be what happened when we moved to Killester (although the agent did say we wouldn't be added to the back of the list).

How long was he waiting for to get his test in Roscommon? Presumably within the week?

    What a shite system

Yes, when push came to shove, got a date within about a week, maybe 10 days.

As an aside, RSA did say that changing location didn't put you to the back of the list.

Make sure you get lots of lessons in run up to test to prevent failing and waiting again.

A lot of people seem to be able to get tests sooner. Log in to the myroadsafety site late at night and it gives late notice cancellations. Have seen quite a few “skipping” the queue this way. It seems the RSA have done a sort of “cancellation-list” type thing.

That MyRoadSafety site is a joke. I get an email stating I can book slots but for the last few weeks there has been no availability in all the areas closest to me (wexford town, gorey, waterford & kilkenny) and then after 10 days I get this email and the loop just continues:

"We emailed you recently to invite you to book your Driving Test Cat B driving test. As you haven’t booked within the time allowed, these appointment slots are no longer available to you.".

Quick to take the €85 but in fairness that should only be paid once a booking is confirmed.

Even with NCT...I literally have to book 4-5 months in advance to have a chance and now they have changed it as you pay in advance whereas before they take your card details and on the day of the booking, they charge your card. Unfortunately things have gone backwards since covid.
