It’s 2023 …. do people still go out and carry condoms with them?

In the gay community they seemed to be used less frequently as most guys on prep?

Women - if you get lucky with a guy do you expect him to carry a condom? The reason I brought this topic up is I’ve been out with a French lady and she says most women don’t expect guys to carry them. Different forms of contraception is used - people drinking less and pill is reliable!

The pill may be reliable to a good degree against pregnancy, but it provides no protection against STD's unless you consider pregnancy to be one.

Not sure how trustworthy that old chestnut is. Being tested is grand but who’s getting tested after each ride away to make sure they are sti free? What about all the non symptomatic infections?

Which is all fine and dandy in a monogamous relationship, but as the OP was about carrying condoms and getting lucky I would be inclined to think the OP is referring to being on the pull, when did you last have an std test wouldn't be in the top ten chat up lines.

It's a HIV prevention drug that's either pills or injected.

Funny enough Prep seems to beore common(and well advertised) in the gay community but I've never heard of a straight person using it.

Sure what with all our young people waving Palestinian flags everywhere, I assume the good little converts aren’t doing any riding.

It's free through the HSE if you meet one of these three criteria. The reason behind this is because it's a lot cheaper for the HSE to invest in PrEP to prevent HIV compared to the resources required to treat someone who is HIV+

The only other requirements for PrEP are a doctors appointment and a renal function test every 3 months

(1) You are having sex without condoms with HIV-positive partners who:

• are not on HIV treatment, or
• are on treatment but not virally suppressed (do not have an ‘undetectable’ viral load)

(2) You are a man who has sex with men, a trans man who has sex with men, or a trans woman who has sex with men, and you meet any one of the following:

• had anal sex without condoms with at least two partners in the last 6 months
• likely to have anal sex without condoms in the next 3 months
• had an STI in the last 12 months
• used HIV PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) in the last 12 months
• used recreational drugs for sex (also known as chemsex) in the last 6 months

(3) Other individuals considered by a specialist HIV/STI doctor to be at significant risk of acquiring HIV through sex.

Yep, plus they usually recommend waiting at least a couple of weeks for most STI tests so if you're doing a fair bit of riding it's an absolutely useless tactic.

I hate wearing johnnies but for a hookup or whatever they're non-negotiable.

Female, and in a long-term relationship, but agreed, they're a necessary evil for anything casual. And yes, I would have always carried my own back in the day. I've also been on the Pill since I was 16, bless its existence.

If people are willingly engaging in risky situations (incl bareback **** with strangers or people who they know have an STI) they should really pay for their treatment themselves. And I have hardly been a saint who has never made stupid mistakes. It’s another way in which people offload personal responsibility onto others.

I have done it bareback before …. With a guy! Long story but years ago!!

I’m female, over 60, personally am attracted to unprotected, but it isn’t a good idea. We have to remember HPV, the most tricky STD, is transmitted easily penis to vagina/oral/anus/rectum back to oral or any variation thereof, something list of us don’t think about and awful lot. Guys can possibly get penile or rectum cancer whilst remaining in heterosexual relationships although unusual. The point is vaccine/vigilance needs to be observed.

I am aged 62, have HPV, yet broadly if is regarded by state health that I should be beyond getting this sort of thing, perhaps living like a nun!

there’s currently no treatment for the virus itself, just treatment for some of the effects it has.

Growing up in the ‘80’s it was , and still is, imo the only way to go.
