Can anyone tell me how much can you earn in Ireland before income tax kicks in (not prsi/usc)?

Assuming you are a single person who is employed then you will have €3,550 if tax credits. You may be entitled for other credits depending on your circumstances

If your total salary for the year is less than this you won't pay income tax

You are still liable for USC and PRSI

Any unused credits are lost, they can't be carried forward

Employers will divide up you available tax credits across the number of pay periods in a year (52 if paid weekly, 12 if paid monthly) and will deduct the credit from your tax due accordingly

If you're unemployed for a chunk of the year, or change employer, then your new employers will try to make a best guess for the remainder of the year

In the following year you can request a P21 balancing statement from Revenue for the year passed (you'll request one for 2023 in 2024)

Revenue will then take your total declared earnings and ensure you have paid the correct amount of tax. If you overpaid they'll refund you

If you underpaid, don't worry, they'll get their money out of you somehow 😉
