Putting boards in loft

I want to put some boards in the loft. Not all of it just an area I want to store some stuff. What thickness should they be. One YouTube said it depend on gap between centre of each joist.

Should the insulation be left under them?

not a fun job, but it worked. In my case I rattled through a number of 4mm drill bits

No, the joists need to be able to take the load. Measure your joists (height, width) and then the space between them. We'll check it here.

Also don't buy loft boards in the likes of Woodies, their prices are eye watering. Wood sheeting has increased massively in price in recent years (has come down somewhat since the height of the madness in 2022) but builder providers will have the same boards for that bit cheaper. Woodies €23, Goodwins are €19.50 or €17.50 if buying 10+ for the same thing.

That's probably 1½X4 inch joists with 60cm centers. Hmmm - I'm not sure that's good enough for loading. Somebody else on here will know for sure.

OK I should say it should be 22 ins centre to centre.. I measured end of one to beginning of next.
