Hello, does anyone actually pay and add a learner driver to their insurance policy?

Or do you just put L plates on the car and drive around (while everything else is in order. i.e having a learner permit and the driver has his licence for more than two years)? Thanks

I don't quite understand but if you are wondering whether a learner can drive your car without being named on your insurance, that's an absolute no.

The age and engine size of the car will also be factors. Another consideration is how many months are remaining on the policy. If I was you, I'd ring the insurance on Monday and get a quote, it will cost you nothing.

Thanks, I called them yesterday and they said it will be an additional 100 euro per month, while I pay 70 right now for myself and a second driver.

Not sure if you're trolling or not but driving without valid insurance is a serious offense.

The driver would be liable to a fine of up to €5000 and six months in prison and a driving ban of two years or more for a first offense.

The vehicle owner would also be committing an offense for allowing an uninsured driver and would be liable to similar penalties.

Both the driver and owner would find it very difficult, if not impossible, to get affordable insurance in the future.

If I remember correctly I paid about €400 to add a 22 year old with a learner permit to my insurance for about six months before they passed their driving test.

It can be stupid money to add young people.

If the family car is anything quicker than the average, they will scald you.

Aviva do an excellent scheme where you get 6 months insurance and 12 lessons for €545.

Well if you do have any assets, it is a hell of a financial risk not to make sure you have them properly insured! In most cases of course the uninsured who do incur significant losses also have very little to loose.

There is a limited additional risk. You would have to question some of the quotes though in these times where the qualified driver rules are very strongly adhered to.

I would further question the nonsense around the steep increase if the car is marginally more powerful than average.

on a 1.2 honda jazz we are paying about 650 euro a year to add a 21 year old learner.. insurance about 350 without them. not to bad.. i remember my first insurance in 2000 on a 1.4 petrol astra was 3700 with quinn insurance..

So, on an annual basis, you're currently paying 840 and the inclusive premium with the named driver will be over 2,000 (170*12 = 2,040).

What statistical information have you to be able to state the additional risk is limited. Also, it's not a question of adhering to the rules, learner drivers have reduced ability to avoid accidents. There is no point in thrashing this about as it is fact. You could offer some insurers any amount of money to take on a young driver and they won't do it. That should be evidence enough, as they are all about profit, profit, profit.
