Any idea on how this fireplace can be removed? We're these usually fixed or built in?

Want to replace with a marble one I bought.

There will be two lugs in each side buried underneath the plaster. Once you find these it should come out handy enough.

Hi, they are usually cemented onto the chimney bricks, a stout chisel and lump hammer around the sides should loosen it.

Great. Thanks for advice here lads. Will try the chisel and lump hammer. Would the lugs be in the plaster above the fireplace? Or where? Sorry for my ignorance.

    FYI.......These are really really heavy.

Yes, @Gusser09 is correct - there should be two iron pegs pinning the mantelpiece to the wall. Usually about 1/4 of the way in from the sides. Try hitting the mantelpiece from below to see if it shifts upwards first.

Correct, 30 or more kgs for a mantelpiece.

That thing will weigh a lot more than 30kg, closer to 100 if it's fully cast from concrete.

You can use a magnet to find the lugs, chip away the plaster and remove the fixings, then it might be free or need a bit of persuasion with a crow bar or something similar. The bottom part is most likely just laid on mortar, so should lift up easy enough.

Be prepared for a lot of mess. When you remove it, soot and sand will come from everywhere. That's my experience anyway, having removed 2 of these.

I thought that the mantle and the vertical legs were three parts. If it's all one unit then yes, nearer to 100kgs!
