POC Haven Rain Jacket or Alternative Rain Jacket Recomendation

    Can anyone recommend this? https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/p/poc-haven-rain-jacket

haven't used POC before and want a good jacket for commuting in and out of work for the winter. 14k cycle, wearing a backpack weighing approx 1kg.

I have gone thru a few rainj ackets including Galibier Tourmalet II, Vaude Sky Fly Jkt II the latest I have is an Endura FS260 Pro Adrenaline Race Cape.

The Galibier is extremely poor breathability and fairly crap in a downpour. The Vaude was good but low breathability and the FS260 is rubbish I find.

I had ordered an Endura Pro SL Waterproof Softshell ExoShell15ST from CRC but they cancelled my ordered as they had no stock so i'm looking for something midrange. The goretext shakedry looks too fragile for my needs plus is a bitt to steep on price. I'm wondering would it just be better to get better base layers like something from Sportful/Castelli to keep me dry underneath. Nothing worse than getting soaked wet through in the morning and having to put back on wet gear in the evening.

No opinions on the jackets but would you not just bring in an extra set of cycling gear every day for the commute back home? Similar to yourself I find jackets either too warm, too sweaty, or not waterproof enough.

I think that Gore specifically mention that Shakedry is too fragile for use with a backpack so you’re right to rule it out.

Would a Castelli Perfetto (long sleeved gabba) work? Good breathability just a question if the water proofing is sufficient. Should be good enough for 14k no matter the weather I would have thought.

I think with a backpack the breathability of most things will be somewhat compromised though.

Awkward having to bring 2 sets of clothes. Lots of washing also & I just don't like being soaked through.

I have used a POC AVIP jacket for the last 5 winters paid 200 sterling for it and is the best bit of kit I've ever bought, breathability is great and the fact is I've never gotten soaked with it and I've been caught out in some serious downpours. Sizing is on the small size though so bear that in mind

If you want to be dry from the rain, for sure. The outdry stuff is fantastic. Dunno about breathable, though?

FWIW, POC is a brand that I've only had good experiences with. Dear, but solid. A sort of 'volvo' of cycling gear. Not everyone's style (esp helmets) but solid.

Do they make/sell them any more? This the white-coloured one?

For commuting distance, you could try one of the mistral jackets from Galibier? I think the Tormalet has always been seen as quite sweaty.

Are you using a back pack or rack? In my experience, backpack straps will make all waterproofs leak (albeit I've never been prepared to pay mega money for jackets for hiking or cycling!).

I have the newest Tourmalet, I've only used it once so far, but it felt substantially less sweat y than the Altura pocket rocket I had been using

I've the Galibier Tempest Pro, which I find quite breathable as well as being excellent at keeping the rain/wind out. It's very packable also. The only thing I'd be wary about if using it with a backpack is the danger of tearing it since it's quite fine.
