Kirk, my trick is to use a small paint-brush to apply paint to all of the tricky parts first, then while the paint is still wet run over those parts with a lightly loaded fine roller. That usually catches the drips from the brushed areas and gives a nice key. Then repeat the roller coat once or twice after that initial coat dries.

Don't use a sponge roller head, get the short tuft mohair ones.

What type of paint are you using ?

I was handed a pot of matt Farrow and Ball (not my choice). My front door is inside my porch, so didn't need to be waterproof.

Mine is external but isn't exposed to rain

I assume i have to use exterior wood paint . I would prefer to use oil based Dulux satinwood but it's for interior wood

An external paint should be more stable if it gets any UV exposure too, especially if there is red or yellow within the mix. Another reason to use exterior types.
