What do you think of calling people this? Although it might be more common in certain parts of the country, I'd usually view it as someone's way of trying to keep me at arm's length. It's only on the rare occasion that I've noticed that some very confident people can pull off calling someone 'kid' without it seeming as if they're being condescending, and who I'd see doing it to others of all ages too. But in general calling someone kid seems condescending. I've never had anyone look me directly in the eye while calling me kid. It's usually done in a situation where they know you're unlikely to call them out on it... for example after you'd already turned to leave.
