I just saw the latest Iphone can retail at €1,989.

I've never been into really expensive phones. I couldn't by bothered signing up to a long contract either to get one clear.

    I have a Samsung A32 5G that I purchased in July 2021 for about €250.

What type of phone have you?

I had a Samsung S7 for 5 years, the battery gave up. Paid 250e for it on amazon. I am now using the S20 that I bought on adverts for 280e. I will keep this phone until it dies, there is no justification in paying 2 grand for phone

I have a Xiaomi POCO X4 which I bought in June last year for £182, on a recommendation from a poster here. No contract.

    Really happy with it!

Nokia 2660. Flip phone (not the horrifically expensive Samsung type).

Refurbished IPhone 7 , occasionally get texts and messages in Japanese.

Other than that, the phone’s grand.

iPhone 8 Plus. have had it since new in 2017.

Fairphone 4. Before this I was buying 100-200e phones and having to replace them nearly every 6 months

Samsung S20 5G FE, got on contract with Vodaphone 3 years ago. I will likely get another Samsung flagship phone in a year or two.

I was a Nokia man from 1999 until 2010.. must of had about 10-12 of them, mostly always free upgrades..

2010 - present its been iPhones, started with 3GS, then got a free upgrade to a 4 when it was released a few months later, then every 2 years went up a number when they were released, so got a 5, 6 & 7 (always with the max available storage and always very cheap to upgrade) kept the 7 for about 4 years, then got an 11, and 2 years later got a 13, but probably won't upgrade again for a few years if I can manage, as it's just too bloody expensive to upgrade lately, despite 24 years loyalty to Vodafone/Eircell, you get feck all for it!!

Batteries were always grand in most of my iPhones, but the 2 recent ones (11 & 13) are crap...

I am on my second Xiaomi & very pleased. Paid around 200 several years ago.

I will wait until the price drops on an optical zoom Xiaomi

Sony Xperia D2403 from 2019. Previous phone from about 2006, although with an interlude of another phone that lost the back panel and wouldn't work.

Despite being from only 2019, it can't be updated properly. It's 'too old'.

Was happy with Samsung A8 until found it was not compatible with some essential features such as photo ID. Now have slightly larger A14.....(c 200 euro). I would love something smaller and thought the flip phone of old was a great idea. Hopefully now that the design is back, it will come down in price.

S10 since it came out in March 2019, upgraded from the S7 I had since it launched. No need to upgrade, but I'd love to be able to get the official Samsung Clearview cover again, extremely thin, can answer calls through the cover and has protected the phone perfectly with all the dropping I do. Was tempted to upgrade to the S20, and I get it at cost through work, but may wait for the next one before deciding. I can't go back from flagship, everything else just feels so slow, so I'm happy out the S10 is still fast.

One Plus Nord. It's grand. It's fast and takes good photo's.

It had a weird glitch where it couldn't regain sim connection when it lost it. Very annoying when flying. I'd land somewhere and the sim couldn't find any network. A factory reset sorted it and weirdly that battery now lasts so much longer too.

I have a Samsung Wave S8500 as my main pnone number/phone call phone. Bought it in 2010. It's on it's second battery, but it looks like Vodafone closing the 3G network will put an end to it.

I also have a Samsung S10 I bought sh I use for access to more modern apps and for internet. I use it more like a mini tablet.

I do have my old I phone 7 and don't plans on buying new model yet it's still working nicely until now.

An iPhone 12 which is a hand me down from my OH. Before that I had a Samsung Galaxy A12 with a buggered charging slot.

Excellent battery life with those One Plus phones. Went over to Google Pixel about 3 years ago and I regret it.

Whatever I phone was the latest one eighteen months ago

I won’t be buying a I phone next time, best phone I ever had was a Huawei

Threw my phone in the sea, I just have a landline now. It can be done with great ease!

OnePlus 7T. Bought it as a Covid treat in the early days of lockdown way back in April 2020. Still going strong and getting nearly 3 days from the battery. I wouldn't be a huge heavy user of phones though but it does be in the wars and covered in dirt and **** from time to time

For me it's the dual sim. Being able to have an irish and local sim really makes a huge difference. And unless you count eSim phones, there's very few that do it.

  • iPhone 14. Me 12 fell asunder piece by piece so had to replace.

iPhone 11, very happy with it too. I’m in no rush to change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,301 ✭✭✭✭banie01

Xiaomi Poco F5, that replaced a Poco f2 that was 3yrs old and before that a Xiaomi Mi 8 that I got in 2018.

My last non Xiaomi was a Samsung s7 edge.

The price/performance point on Xiaomi is very hard to beat. I flash mine with xiaomi.eu ROM and that gets the best of the Chinese ROMs without the ads or overlays.

Redmi on post mobile, never again, just back from Eastern Europe and it worked perfectly for 2 weeks, honestly don't know if it's the phone or network

Pixel 7 for the last six months or so, think had one of the onepluses prior to that for about 3 years. So will be another 2 or 3 years on this one. Technology leap this time was pretty minimal tbh. Have a thirty day rolling contract for a tenner a month so never feel bad upgrading in a few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 243 ✭✭patmahe

Xiaomi RedMi Note 10 Pro, bought for €260 almost exactly 2 years ago. Its never let me down and does everything I need it to. I always shop in the €200-300 range and to date have always had android phones, I will typically change every 3 years or so when the battery life starts to deteriorate to the point that I notice it. I have a 9.99 a month rolling contract and always buy my phones outright that way I'm not tied to anything or paying much and I use my phone a lot and work in IT so would happily pay more if I thought there would be a benefit to doing so.

Can't see what a phone for a couple of grand would give me that my current one doesn't, wouldn't mind trying it but not at my own expense, if apple or anyone else wants to provide me with a demo model then grand :)

Been climbing the Galaxy S ladder since the first one. Skipping a few rungs along the way. On the S9 for now. Screen is minor cracked so will be upgrading soon enough. Before the end of the year probably. Might go A23 or see if I can snag a Fairphone here in Canada...

XIAOMI Redmi 9 4GB+64GB since May 2021 no rush to update it. Will keep it until it stops working.

Edit> iirc I paid about £100 for it and got it on a recommendation on Bargain Alerts.

iPhone 7. I had an iPhone 5 up until about a year ago and then it stopped working. Went online and managed to get an iPhone 7 at cheaper value then the newer versions. I'm happy enough with it anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,748 ✭✭✭✭maccored

i bought an iphone 8 about 3 years ago for 200 in one of those second hand tech shops. Im going to upgrade it to a higher numbered iphone for about the same money in a few years time. Apple products last forever - same with the macs. I just buy older gear. cheaper and lasts as long as anything else

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,186 ✭✭✭✭L1011

129 quid TCL I've had for over two years and with a fecked screen for over a year.

It is just starting to show some unreliability with the charging port and it'll be replaced in the next few weeks. Probably another under 200 quid job

Do people here think they're amazing cool have cheap/outdated phones that barely have support anymore.

Says a lot about Boards demographics.

FWIW iPhone 13. May upgrade to 15 next month but not sure yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,842 ✭✭✭roosterman71

Doubt it. I'd say most with the newest expensive flashiest phones are the ones thinking they're amazing/cool.

What support does a phone need? Buy a standard cheapish phone, use and abuse it, then replace when it needs replacing.

Nah, card-carrying nerd here, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 😉 Just left the Apple world a couple of weeks ago, no regrets so far. Most excited over a new phone that I've been in a decade!

The one bit of support that every phone should still be getting is security updates, especially on the Android side. While Android is nowhere near the toxic hell stew it once was, with users completely at the mercy of manufacturers for bug fixes and the patching of weaknesses, it is still a far more decentralized environment than iOS, making it easier for attackers to go after devices with weak security, open back-doors, etc.

And while you might not care about the data you have on your phone and that it's available to anyone who wants to take it, you're also leaving your phone open to be used for all kinds of identity theft, used to send out spam texts, being tied into a botnet, and all other stuff, those at the receiving end of those activities DO care!

Hardware-wise you're right, of course. The warranty time-frames are so short, and even mid-range devices so generally affordable, that it is often easier to use the device until it falls apart. I'll be honest, if it wasn't for my own deeply ingrained geekiness and the fact that I just want something that's a little more "out there" than the regular slab phone, I'd probably be following that paradigm myself.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Ah ya've put the piss crossways in me now with security concerns. Is there anything ya'd recommend to have running on Android to help here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,222 ✭✭✭✭freshpopcorn

My phone basically started smoking last night so I need a new one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,642 ✭✭✭thomil

For one thing, check if your model is still getting Android security updates. Google basically mandates any manufacturer using Android to push them out at least every 90 days, independent of any feature updates. Also, Google Play Protect is a built-in protection solution on most somewhat modern Android phones, so check if you have that as well. Those two, combined with the usual best practices of staying away from questionable websites & links, not reacting to spam text messages & the likes should already drastically reduce any exposure. What phone do you have at the moment, if I may ask?

With regards to security software, I'm only really getting my feet wet with regards to Android after ten years on iOS, so I'm still a bit green in that regard. I'm using Malwarebytes as an additional layer of security on my MacBook and I've just seen that this is available in the Google Play Store as well, so that might be worth a look, but I haven't tried that on my phone yet.

EDIT: Oh, and just to make sure, when I referred to "you" in my earlier post, I wasn't referring to you in particular, but to phone users in general. If I came across as unduly aggressive, I apologies for that.

In terms of security of your information, get a Samsung phone that has Knox and their Secure Folder app. The secure folder is a bit like having an encrypted phone within a phone. You can keep photos, banking apps, files, crypto wallets, and so on, in it and it's all locked down pretty tight and kept separate from the rest of what's on the phone and is protected with dedicated hardware.. The NSA approved Knox for government use in the US for handling classified information.

Was looking at a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold in Harvey Norman recently. €2109 😳😳😳

Seems Samsung and Apple are gone bonkers.

I’ll stick with my current iPhone 13.

That's it for me. I used to be the kind to want the latest and greatest but I'm past that now, mainly down to cost. I spent €940 on my iPhone 8 Plus back in 2017 so wanted to get as long out of it as possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,436 ✭✭✭dartboardio

iPhone 11 Pro Max which has given me nothing but battery trouble since I bought it.

my iPhone X (10) is unreal and has been through the wars and still works perfectly, even left it sitting in the full bathtub for an hour and it came out perfect no issues whatsoever :V the front screen has been battered many times on and off the floor and not a crack on it.

Huawei P20 was probably the best phone though, super fast, amazing camera, bought it back in 2019 and works perfectly

OnePlus for me, had the OnePlus 2, then moved to the OnePlus Nord - other than a charging port issue impacting the warp charging, that they covered under warranty --> happy out with it

Samsung of some kind, got it online last year from amazon, cost around £125.

Buying an expensive phone is a total waste of money for 99% of people.
