Upgrade from 1070

I haven't been keeping track of the GPU market at all, so not sure where to go here.

Current build is a 1070, i7-6700k, Asus Z170-A and 32gb ram. Usage is purely for games.

I don't need the absolute latest and greatest. I was thinking a 4070? Is it worth spending the extra to go 4080? 4090 definitely beyond what I want to spend. I've had the current build for nearly 7 years, I'd like to get a similar lifespan from this upgrade.

Anyone throw me together a potential build?

AMD RX 6800 XT / just-launched 7800 XT outperform the 4070 and are cheaper to boot.

But the i7-6700K is going to bottleneck whatever GPU you upgrade to.

Ryzen 5-5600 + motherboard/cooler would be around ~250eur and let you reuse your 32GB of DDR4.

I'd also advise a new power supply, since GPU power requirements have gone up significantly. Seasonic Focus GX, be quiet Pure Power 12M or Corsair RM 750W units (among others) are decently priced & will last a decade.

My bad, I didn't mean upgrade just the GPU, I meant I'm happy to upgrade CPU / motherboard / GPU / PSU. If the 32gb of DDR4 is reusable without any bottlenecking that'd be awesome though, but if it'd be better to just get new RAM I'm ok with that.

I have a g-sync monitor so I'd prefer to stay with Nvidia, also forgot to mention that!

Your cheap CPU choices on AMD 5000 are 5600 (6 cores), 5700X (8 cores)(+60eur).

There's also 5800X3D (with its magic 3D V-cache) but for not much more you could go for a more future-proof Ryzen 7600.

As for GPU, the RTX 4070 and 4070 Ti are about equal for performance-per-dollar/euro. The 4080 performs better but the value is worse; and they start at over 1100.

Realistically you need a new build as the 6700K is pretty old and that 32GB Ram is presumably slower ram.

You would get away in some games with just getting a new card for now and pushing out the full upgrade for another while. Depends on what you are playing.

The best value cards right now are probably 7800XT or 6800XT, or 6700XT if you want to step down.

Unfortunately we're entering an era of horrible optimisation in many (but of course not all) new PC games. Getting a card now that lasts as long as the GTX1070 need would almost necessitate getting a 7900XTX or 4090.

IMHO no.

The 4070 is already good enough for 1080p 144fps+ / 1440p 120fps / 4K 60fps, and 4070 Ti has the same 192-bit bus.

For €800 I'd recommend saving your money.

I'm in the same boat. Need to move on from the 1070. If i want ray tracing is there any point at all going with amd?

Honestly if you're really interested in ray tracing you should aim for at least a 4070. AMD cards can do ray tracing, but they're a generation behind and lack performance enhancements like DLSS and ray reconstruction. FSR simply doesn't look as good as DLSS at lower settings i.e. DLSS 2 performance mode is much better looking than FSR 2 performance mode. You'll just end up turning off ray tracing in games where there's a heavy performance penalty on an AMD card.

Also no current card is going to last you as long as the 1070 has. System requirements are growing exponentially and PC ports haven't been this unoptimized since the 360/PS3 era.

PC ports aren't unoptimized, the consoles simply took a massive leap to RTX 2070/RX 6800-level in 2020 and developers can finally target that as a new baseline.

I got a 6750XT a few months ago and I'm very happy with it.

Runs Cyberpunk, Red dead 2 @ 4k60 with only a few settings turned down.

Might be some deals on cards around black friday, but probably not on Nvidia cards

Yeah suppose a 4070 is what i'm looking at. Is there any decent irish site for gpu's? All the prices seem mad. My psu is either 600 or 650 so won't i need to upgrade that as well?

Paradigit have models for 659-689 but TBH they're cheaper from Germany, e.g. CaseKing.de & AmazonDE have them for just over 600.

RTX 4070 uses 200W, about 25W more than GTX 1070.
