Does anybody has a hybrid or electric in the countryside?

And how are you getting on?

I’m thinking of a hybrid to go commute to Dublin. About an hour of commuting without motorways but national and country roads (braking and below 80 with traffic)

does anybody have experience with this?

Do you have a driveway at home?

If you do, then 160km commute to Dublin would likely be better served in an EV than a hybrid.

Whats your budget and car preference and folks can make suggestions on cars with sufficient range and body type for you.

I do have a driveway. Not fully sold on the EVs living in the countryside. We are **** filling up the car and it is not the first time we got the fright we would run out of fuel before getting to the garage.

budget: around 20 grand

car preference: just a bit visually appealing. Not a fan of the ioniq

Absolutely ideal use case for a full ev. Ours has saved us thousands in fuel. You could get a Kona possible for that money.

I drive an Id.3 with the bigger battery. It does a 260 km return journey easily.

Full EV sounds like the best option. You can say goodbye to the garage, so no more anxiety about driving somewhere to get fuel. Once you switch your view that the driveway is the filling station you know you're sorted with an EV.

For 20k budget you're looking at cars with about 200 km daily range potential with home charging only. For another 5-10k on top of that you can can get 300 km of range.

Just on the charging bit, takes about 2 mins to get out of car, retrieve cable and insert it into car. Then walk away. Car will be charged the next morning (assuming you can set the charger and car to come on at a set time if you are on day night electric).

Very simple.

You are doing it wrong :-) It only takes 10 seconds with a fixed cable as you don't need to retrieve the cable.

There's ID.3s asking a bit over €20k, you could probably argue them down closer to your budget

Regarding remembering to charge, if you have a home charger then you don't have to go anywhere, just set a reminder on your phone for around 8pm every day and pop out to plug in the car (assuming you forgot when you got home)

An EV will likely save several thousand per year versus the equivalent hybrid or diesel

@UnhappyCustomer BEV would work for you best, you start every day with fueled vehicle. If you have emergency in the middle of night, then charge points are open 24/7 which cannot be said about garages in remote areas.

I live in the countryside and have PHEV and BEV.

I've used public charging on less than 10 occasions in 2.5 years of BEV ownership and approx 45,000km of driving. My commute is a round trip of 135km on mix of national, region road and motorways.

The PHEV is there as it is a lovely car and the wife isn't quite ready to go all in with BEV just yet. During the week about 90% of the driving in the PHEV is done on battery.

Are you on about the original Ioniq. How can you not like that? It us still a great looking car both inside and outside. Of course you could always look at the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe too do that might be a bit small for you. Not that many electric cars out there second hand yet yet for under 20k. Not that much choice.

I have an Ev and a hybrid, and live in the countryside.

We manage just fine.

Hybrid has enough range to take me to work with a fair bit to spare, where I can charge for free before return journey. It will take OH to work and back with some to spare.

Charging with one charge point also isn't an issue, as its rare both would need charged on the same night.

Have 3 EVs in the countryside and been driving EV since 2016. I used to do 60k a year, down to about 45k now. Theres no matching EVs for high mile and rural use.

There was a lot of quotes there so I'll just respond to what you asked me which is whether you'd be worse off plugging in every evening

First off, you might only be plugging in every second day depending on usage

Second, no it won't cost you more

Watch the consumption, not the price of a single charge/fueling

EV like an ID.3 should achieve 16kWh/100km year round, there's more efficient EVs out there but I'll stick with my example

160km per day 5 days a week is approximately 40,000km per year or 6,400kWh of electricity

Using the cheapest EV tariff from Pinergy of 6.92c/kWh that's an annual cost of €442.88

Taking a hybrid and assuming 4l/100km (which is ambitious) and a fuel price of €1.75/l you're looking at 1,600l of fuel costing €2,800 per year

We have a 222 Tesla model 3, a 232 Ora funky cat and a 2011 nissan leaf 24kwh. Each has its purpose, we recently took the tesla to France on holiday, the Ora is for herself and the leaf is my local car I bought as a joke but it does all the local driving and is good for my stepson to learn to drive locally in.

Cheapest rate from Pinergy is only 5c incl VAT and you get €100 welcome bonus. So based on your sums it wouldn't cost €442.88 to charge the car for the whole year, but only €220 😀

It is worth saying that the likes of the Pinergy plan are pretty awful outside of the EV charging times

They work well if you have a home battery and solar, but I'm guessing the OP doesn't

So it's very important to do your homework on tariffs

Now, in theory if you're saving €2k in petrol then you as long as your electricity bill goes up by less than that, it's a saving

I ignored the op as I was hoping some one could explain an hours drive and traffic, it could mean 100 km or 20km, I have a plug in hybrid, I could give you a cost per trip, but I would need to know the distance, and is it possible to charge in work?

It’s probably a fairer comparison to use other current 24 hour or smart rates than that pinergy one. My night rate is now 17 cents after the coming price drop. That’s available for 8 hours.

If I was buying currently for 20k I think an ID.3 would be a good option. All the original batch will be 3 years old around now and a lot will be back with dealers after PCP.

I purchased one of the 1st editions and I think if I was selling it today I wouldn't expect more than 20k.
