    Hi! Please help.

my wife and I moved to uk from Ireland 2 years ago for work. We brought our car with us and registered it over here. We are aware that we can each bring a car with us back to Ireland when we ultimately move back next year without having to pay vrt.

My question is since the car we brought over with us was originally registered in Ireland can we bring this car back to Ireland in addition to me bringing a new UK registered car and my wife bringing a new UK registered car back to Ireland without paying any VRT on any of the 3 cars?

would really appreciate any thoughts. Thanks so much!

You need to prove 6 months of usage of the car in the UK to qualify for no vrt. It's unlikely to work unless you have a ton of "evidence" to support your claims.

Also if it's a new UK car you will need to pay vat if less than 5000miles on the clock.

Did you claim the VRT rebate when you exported it? If you did then it's needs to be VRTd again and would be one of your exemptions.

    Thanks.

Do you mean did we claim the vrt rebate when we exported the car from Ireland to the uk?

no would be the answer. I didn’t realise that could be done.

do u think that coz we didn’t claim the rebate when we imported it to the uk we could bring that car back to Ireland without paying the vrt plus 2 other cars (one for me and one for wife).

If you didn't claim VRT back when you moved to the UK then that car won't need VRT paid twice on it when reregistering it in Ireland. However you will still need to go through the VRT application process but there should be no VRT due on it because it was paid originally when it was first on Irish plates. Just make sure you have the current V5 registration document.

Regarding buying a new car, to quality for the VRT exemption under Transfer of Residency, you will need to have owned it for at least 6 months in the UK prior to applying for the VRT exemption. Revenue here will require proof that the car was in use in the UK during that minimum 6 month period - i.e. proof of insurance, MOT (if applicable), tax, etc. So parking the car up for 6 months until you move home won't work.

If you qualify for the VRT exemption then you cannot sell the car over here for at least 12 months. If you do sell it on within that 12 months then you will be liable for VRT.
