Become secondary teacher with MA in Applied Linguistics?

Hi. Thanks in advance for any help or info.

I have been living abroad and teaching English for about 12 years. I have mainly taught English as a foreign language, academic writing, technical writing in universities. I have not worked in a secondary school before but I have taught a lot of teenagers in private language schools or in universities.

For the past 5 years I have been lecturing in academic writing in German universities.

I would like to return to Ireland and become a secondary school teacher. I have an MA in Applied Linguistics, which focuses on how to teach and learn languages.

I can speak French and German fluently so I think I could teach English, French and/or German.

So, my question: would I have to complete a two-year masters in order to teach in Ireland or should I be able to transfer over from German 3rd level into Irish secondary?

Unfortunately not, the Teaching Council opinion on Masters is that they are too specific and you need the PME to teach.

You can with Hibernia but you would have to be Ireland for teaching practice which is a large component of the programme.

Also, you should know that the teaching council generally want you to have a degree (or a significant number of ECTs) in the subject you’re teaching, so your undergrad may be more relevant than your masters.

A friend of mine once remarked that going by the TC criteria both himself and Einstein won't be qualified to teach Maths.

As someone said above , your undergrad is more relevant. What is your BA in?

I have a BSc Business Mathematics degree and the TC deem me not qualified enough to teach business. This is what you are dealing with…

I've an honours degree in theoretical physics as well as two years of experimental physics from an Irish university and they deem me not qualified to teach physics!

As others have said op, your primary degree could be the deciding factor. I'd check that out first before spending money on a teaching qualification.

Sounds like you'll only be qualified for French and Spanish so. You'd have to go back and do undergrad credits to get the German recognised.
