Audi Car Models

I have always fancied having an Audi car at some stage in my life, I suppose something of a bucket list!

What are people's advice or recommendations for a good Audi A model that may have to carry 4 adults sometimes, but usually 2 adults.

I am not interested in a new model but a trade in would be involved if I intended to go for a model somewhere 4/5 years old.

    From my take,

    A3 - Entry Level

    A4 - All road model

    A5 - More Expensive A4 version

A6 - Mid Size luxury model

    A7 - Sports version of the A6

    A8 - Audi's Flagship model

Any advice on Audi's base 'A' models would be appreciate. 😮

I guess budget would be 1st question.

Great cars give minor issues but nothing massive and I dont look after them.

If it was me buying tomorrow it would be A7, A6, A5, A8, A4, A3 in that order.

What's your budget? Whatever you do, get S Line cars. Like BMW and Merc there's a huge difference between standard models and the sportier looking ones.

An A8 at 4 to 5 years old will be twice as much as an A3. Everything else somewhere in between.

Wouldn't be my cup of tea personally but i think the A3 saloon S Line is the best looking saloon car Audi make on the exterior. Much smaller buy so we'll designed, great lines. Get inside and its well behind the bigger models. The rest of the range here have classy interiors, A3 not so much its more of a fancy VW Golf and Ford focus competitor.

A4 is the standard saloon really, probably the best seller. A5 is beautiful. I'd have a 5 door A5 over A4 any day. Even if it's dearer I'd drop back a year. Current models out since 2016 I think and end of life now. Small bit dated compared to 3 series and c class but still nice.

A6 has a beautiful interior but you're getting into big cars now which you may or may not want. A7 gorgeous but bordering on flashy. Same underneath as an A6. I'd have either to be honest and would be my pick of the range. Followed closely by A5. A6 and A7 out since 2018, model change that year so there are old models 2018 going for much much cheaper than new 2018 models.

A8 probably not for you since you asked about the entire range unless you really want the best of the best, massively expensive and will only come in big engines. Hugely comfortable and quiet cruiser. Get an audi badge for much cheaper.

Why is the A7 so more expensive than the A6 which is a much better option pricewise. Also think the A7 looks a bit outdated already hard to know why.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

A7 is sportier, has a pneumatic spoiler of some models (if not all) whereas the A6 is more executive and thus boring/more practical. Both great cars, but A7 is a single persons car maybe at a push grown up kids car, A6 is a family car and doubly so if you get the Avant model.

Tech will tend to come to the higher models first and then trickle down too which is why they're more expensive.

Also as an A5 owner, the addition of a Sportback is not to be sniffed at. A5/A7 are the only saloons that have them so if you want a sporty looking car with a sizeable boot they're a good bet.

ideally without a budget and what the car will be used for it's hard to give an accurate opinion

Don't buy it then, it's up to the buyer to deem if it's worth it or not. You find it overpriced and that's ok, there's plenty of other cars out there.

I never said I was going to the A6 is better value better option. Cracking looking cars however are people willing to pay 10k for cars with 200k on the clock

Depends on what the OP wants and value is only one part of buying a car imo. If it was the whole picture we'd all be driving Dacia's.

Most have given their opinion here in terms of style, function and value, you've just focused on value.

200k is nothing on these types of cars provided they've been serviced at the correct intervals.

If you want value you shouldn't be looking at Audi. Try Dacia, SEAT etc. If you think 10k€ is a lot I'd suggest a used Audi isn't for you. 10k€ is a miniscule budget these days.

I have a used Audi 10k for a car with 200k miles is a lot whatever the brand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,705 ✭✭✭User1998

200k miles is still a lot no matter how much its been serviced. Your probably going to run into issues considering the age and mileage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭Honey50000

My car has 220 on it smally niggly problems have emerged electric windows, etc. Not massive issues but still from wear and tear I will be moving to a new A6 when prices cool down a bit but 150,000 miles would be a ballpark I woudlent like to exceed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,705 ✭✭✭User1998

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve exceeded it multiple times, but this was mainly on 4 year old company cars with full service history, up and down the motorway all their life.

Me personally I wouldn’t recommend a german car with 200k miles thats also 12 years old.

Anyway sorry OP, slightly off topic.

Depends on the price also that car was 10k if the same car was 3 or 4k well its different then.

I drive a 2017 Skoda Superb with 260k km on the clock, was a company car before I got it. Has always been serviced when needed and apart from a timing belt change (per manufacturers schedule) it hasn't had any problems at all. I think these VW group diesels are built to be driven for a long long time. In fact, I would be more hesitant buying a diesel with very low mileage, as that might cause problems with DPF etc.

On the topic of (not outrageously expensive) Audis my order of preference would be A6, A7, A5, A4, A3, A1. With an unlimited budget it would be the Q8 or an E-Tron GT.

I do love my current (2012) A7 , but in some ways I prefer the (2010) A6 which preceded it. Proper seperate boot for one. The hatchback is handy for loading but not very deep - though that's probably as much a response to the emissions requirements as anything.

I'd echo that regardless of model, regular servicing will be essential if you want to get the big miles out of it. I would also strongly advise the 3.0 TDI Quattro S-Line spec if going for an A6/7. Just suits the bigger car better and makes everything so much easier. Also the A7 is auto only as far as I'm aware but that's no bad thing - though if you prefer manuals it may be an issue. In that case go for the A6, although I would never go manual again myself havuing had several good autos.

While the bigger 20/21" wheels may look nice, I'd argue that they're not practical on most of our roads and uncomfortable with the stiffer S-line spec. I changed mine to 18" equivalents. Still look well and a lot better ride quality and much cheaper per tyre too.

Toys FTW too but parking sensors essential, as is cruise control and xenon/LED lights, as well as the full leather interior for easy cleaning.

The A4/5 never appealed as I just prefer the bigger, better proportioned A6/A7. The A4/5 seem to inherit the interior of the A6/7 in the next generation, so a newer A4/5 will have the older interior from its bigger brothers. I like the C7 generation interior of my current one and am in no rush to move to touchscreens everywhere TBH. The C6/7 interior is very nice, practical and well-wearing. My 2010 A6 had 410,000km on it when I changed but you couldn't tell from the interior and all the electrics worked.

My next one though will probably be a 2015-onwards A8 but these are becoming very hard to find in the right spec, colour, and for non-crazy money. Still, as my A7 only has 165000km on it, I won't be changing a while yet.

Have an a5 3.0 tdi sline at the minute.

If Audi do one thing well it's interiors. 15 years old and still great inside, much better than the 10 year old 5 series I had last.

The a5 is a bit small and short for motorway cruising but for daily and back roads it's great.

I'd echo those who are saying to stretch to sline.

3.0 is nice but probably unnecessary in a4 and a5.

BMW do drive better but the quattro us very grippy.

A7, look very well in some specs and colours otherwise can look a bit chubby.

A6 and A8 are classy cars.

A4 bit bland and older ones are quite small in back and boot.

I like the a5 but the coupe in particular is not practical, it's basically just my work car around here. 4 year old has to cross her legs behind me!!

    A3, I'd prob just buy a golf.

Compare a similarly spec'd A6 with the 3l engine and its much closer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

The other thing is that it's very hard to get an A6 in a decent spec - I know, I tried and it was one of the reasons I ended up with the A7.

My previous A6 was the SLine LeMans spec and a UK import so it had almost everything, but the number of cloth seat or basic MMI A6s was ridiculous. Plus the 3.0 TDI Quattro auto is a lot rarer in the A6.

The A7 comes with the better engine, gearbox and seating options by default. Mine also has the HUD (never use it - find it more a distraction than anything), auto park option (also never use it as I've already parked by the time I think of it), full leather electric memory seat for the driver, Nav (with maps I updated last year) and other bits that I just couldn't find in the one A6.

As I said, I will probably get an A8 next (and break my pattern of 2-by-2 purchasing - 2 Mirages, 2 Passats, 2 A6s..) because I just prefer the big saloon and they too come with most of the extras I would expect/want by default - although even there there are stupid choices like those godawful brown interiors or missing options that make you wonder WTF the original buyer was doing?!

Can't really see myself moving from Audi though. Don't like/rate BMWs, and Mercs I can't decide on.. CLS maybe but it's a lot smaller inside than it looks and you don't get the centre rear seat in most plus the majority are only 2.1 diesels, the E has the same issues as the A6 - too many options and usually not in the right combination, so maybe an S? Friend has a 07 350 diesel and it still holds up very well - but I do prefer the A8, so...

Don't confuse low milage with lots of short trips in an urban environment which is more likely to result in DPF issues. I used to do one 500km round trip per week in a previous car and no other journeys. It had lower than average mileage. (I accept however that a prospective buyer is not going to know that).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,705 ✭✭✭User1998

And vice versa, you’d think a high mileage car shouldn’t suffer any DPF issues but it may have been used as a taxi in the city or just done a lot of short journeys.
