We all know about scam call u hang up from "Amazon" job done. Lately I've had a few missed calls when I call the number back nothing so forget about it. Later the number calls back and it seems a genuine person on the end and they sound as surprised as me when I tell them I had a missed call 1st from them. The guy today seemed annoyed that I called him.

    It’s a scam… I’d one at lunchtime…. Always a person with an accent from the Indian subcontinent…

Na I'm in Cork and this guy had a strong Cork accent. He sounded like I woke him up. The conversation basically went.

    Him: hi

    Me: how are ya.

Him: I'm returning ur call. (Sounds annoyed).

Me: I was returning a missed call from this number earlier.

Him: No wasn't me what do u want.

Me: just returning the call as I said.

    Him: no wasn't me goodbye.

This has happened 4 or 5 times the last few months.

They are using software on their side to make it look like the calls are coming from an actual mobile number, the person you are calling doesn't have any involvement in it. The scam calls have started to get more common the last couple of weeks.

The scammers fake a random Irish number caller ID to try and get you to answer. So when you call it back, you're actually calling some randomer who didn't ring you at all. This has been going on for ages now, they seem to be targeting mostly 086 numbers at the moment.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

What does the scammer gain by having two people think they have missed a call from each other?

Nothing, they just know that by now most people won't answer international numbers as most people know they're scams, so they fake a random domestic number of the target country to try and get an answer.

I just had an Irish man living abroad call me to say he was returning my missed call from yesterday. I didn't make any calls at all yesterday, so I assume my number has been spoofed for one of these scams.

It's a bit unsettling to think my phone number is being used to scam people. Is there anything I should do about this - notify network provider or anything? I assume there basically nothing can be done anyway.

You can register a complaint with ComReg, they will 'investigate' before getting back to you to say they can do nothing because the call originated from outside the country. I have been through this before with them... when I wrote back to them and asked if they were raising the matter at any of their international conferences when they would be in contact with other international regulators... they never got back to me.

They found their SEP excuse (someone else's problem) and that's them off the hook.

I've had this happen twice, one rang me back, the other person texted me.

They both seemed to think I was lying when I said I didn't call them.

    Happened me last week

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I got the AIB card compromised text from 087 number yesterday

Just ignore it. They just generated a number at random that happened to be yours. They'll use it a few times and move on. Nothing to feel unsettled about.

I operate on the principle that my phone is for my convenience, not other people's.

If I get a call from an unknown number that I'm not expecting I won't answer it. Missed calls from unknown numbers stay missed, I won't call them back.

Anyone important to me is in my Contacts, so I'll know if I need to get back to someone.

Good principle, one that I employ too ..... except.... as I get older and clock up medical issues, I find I have to receive more telephone communication from hospitals. I get texts or letters telling me to expect telephone calls on certain dates between certain hours and warning that they will be displayed as coming from 'private' numbers. Sometimes they happen on the dates and time window indicated, sometimes not. One government dept will warn you about scam calls while the HSE ensures that you may have to answer them.

My mother is driven demented wondering which calls might be scams and which might be doctors in the various hospitals that she is involved with, calling to talk to her.
