Just a quick question. About 3 months ago I foolishly cancelled the insurance on my apartment. I want to get it back. As I am looking at different websites to get a quote they are asking me what I want to insure my contents for. I haven't a clue. What kind of figure should I put down?

I don't need building insurance as I have a management company for that. So it's just really contents. To me it's a normal apartment with normal stuff.

You need to work out how much it would cost to replace everything on a like for like basis. If you could turn your apartment upside down everything that would move needs to be covered by contents insurance.

All blinds, curtains, furniture, everything in your kitchen cupboards and on the countertops, ornaments, phone/tablet/laptop, TV, any sound systems, pictures, clothes, underwear, shoes, jewellery, make-up, perfume, toiletries etc as applicable.

If everything was lost in a fire you need to have sufficient cover to replace it.

Thanks Leg End. It probably sounds like a stupid question but I have no idea of a ballpark figure.

Nobody can estimate a figure for you. You could have cheap'n'cheerful stuff, you could have very high end stuff, or anywhere in between.

You need to sit down and go through the items, look up similar online if needs be, and tot up a total for YOUR stuff.

Are you an owner or a renter?

If you're an owner, you also need to cover fixtures inside the apartment, such as kitchen and bathroom - again, if the place burnt down, you need to fit it out from the plaster inwards so everything needs to be covered.

Again, you'll need to figure out a value for what you actually have.

Like Heidi said, you need to do some research on what it would cost to replace each item.

I thought building insurance covered kitchens, built in wardrobes and bathrooms etc as long as they were standard and not high-end, so check that out. I know it does for a house.

That applies to houses, apartments are different - the management company owns the walls, you own everything within the walls from the plaster in, so the cover is different.

I didn't know that, at least apache can factor that in. So fitted kitchen, countertop, sink, appliances and tiles, bathroom suites and tiles and all flooring too.

OP make a list of your stuff.

Guess then price to replace each thing.

    Add up the guesses.

Add 10% for the stuff you forgot.

That's how much cover you need.

Also don't overdo it, like don't put too much on the insurance as you will pay along the years more on insurance than what would cost you to replace items.

Remember the shills only get paid when you react to them.

Nonsense, insurance is cheap enough, replacing a lifetime of possessions on a like for like basis would run into the tens of thousands.

I got it sorted. Piece of mind in case anything happens.
