Looking to batch convert 400+ aiff files to mp3

I'm trying to batch convert a boat load of aiffs. All the free online converters have poxy limits of 5 to 20 at a time. Too much of a pain. I'm at work so can't install anything without admin credentials.

Any other ideas/alternatives?

Download the Windows version of ffmpeg and try that. It might not need admin rights...

if you can't install anything, your options are limited.

If it's for work, request that you can install something, then it's going to be as simple as

for FILE in $(basename -s .aiff *); do ffmpeg -i $FILE.aiff -acodec libmp3lame $FILE.mp3  ; done

Do provide log output of what didn't work.

Windows can't open this file (.xz)

.xz is a compressed archive. 7zip will open it and allow you to take out the individual music files, but you probably can't install that either!

ffmpeg is a commandline program. Hold down the windows key and press r. then type in cmd and press enter.

remember where you extracted ffmpeg to, e.g. c:\Users\(your username)\Downloads

then type:

cd "path-to where you saved ffmpeg"

then type ffmpeg and tell us what it says.

Theres ways around a Mac if that’s what you work with but honestly, as you say, it really would be more a home job when you can dedicate yourself to it.

Just Sun Systems - Unix - Linux is in my brain and friggin easy for anyone who wants to get familiar. Like everything a familiarity period, but so darned easy a chimp could be trained.

Decades ago I’d no issue with creating bat files for DOS. Latterly at work I created mischievous boot files. 🤣😁😁

open itunes, load all the aif files into a playlist, set the audio importer etc to the mp3 settings you want and set the playlist content off to conversion

iTunes Apple only, as pointed out above he’s on Windows. Things would definitely have been easier on a Mac at work.

Are these files of a sensitive nature, and what size are they?

Music files. Just over 20 GB. I'll just do it at home when I have the time. Probably next week. Thanks though.

I've downloaded https://www.gyan.dev/ffmpeg/builds/ffmpeg-git-essentials.7z

In explorer, unzip, right click the file, click extract.

You'll get a new folder underneath.

Right click the new folder called ffmpeg-2023-08-14-git-c704901324-essentials_build and click open terminal here.

Inside there, you need to cd into the next folder, type cd ff TAB, it'll auto compete so the command will look like

cd ffmpeg-2023-08-14-git-c704901324-essentials_build

then you need to cd into the bin folder

cd bin

Next,

type ff TAB, it;ll auto complete, then -version
