Documentary tonight on RTE2 about the US evacuation from Pakistan and the takeover of the Taliban.

Showed thousands of Afghans risking their lives to flee the country the second the Taliban arrived into Kabul.

One simple question I couldn't fathom was what the instant panic was in leaving?

Were the Taliban going to shut down the airports and block every exit point out of the country?

Excuse my ignorance but the whole thing just didn't add up to me..

The Taliban follow the Koran to the letter of the law. The Saudis are hippies in comparison.

The part where Biden states the invasion and pullout to be a success made me spit out my beer.

To answer your question on why the panic, the Talibans were implementing their own security controls to stop anyone they wanted to remain (i.e. government officials, people who co-operated with the USA et al. forces, political enemies in general, womeon travelling without escort of a man etc.) as well as it would simply be harder to get out under Taliban even if you did were not a person of interest. If you could get on a flight as a young 20s person you'd have a life in a western democracy instead of among hte fanatics taking over; if you've only lived under such (relative) freedom that makes a lot of sense having heard all the horror (and true) stories of the Talibans.

"Were the Taliban going to shut down the airports and block every exit point out of the country?"

Eh... yes actually? I think they were. At least every legal exit point was going to be heavily policed.

People were afraid for their lives and were desperate to escape while they still could.

I'm confused why you are confused.
