Hi, I currently own a 2015 VW Passat 1.4 petrol. I have it one year now and the oil change is coming up on dashboard soon! Should I just get an oil and filter change or go for the full service? It has 118k km on the clock. Fully serviced one year ago.

Go for the full service imo. Isn’t the recommendation every 15K or 1 year whichever comes first.

What mileage have you done since last service would be relevant. Mechanic mate of mine says the best thing you can do is to stick to the recommended oil & oil filter change. Always. He's seen too many engines where the owner 'forgot' about it for a while and ends up with bigger problems. It's a false economy.

I'd be getting the brakes and shocks/ suspension/ steering a look over as well. You can look at your own tyres and see if they are wearing unevenly on either inside or outside, tread depth etc.

If it was fully serviced last year (oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, etc) then you only need to get a minor service this year. (Oil, oil filter). And then next year you would do a full service, unless you do very little mileage, in that case you could probably get another minor service again next year.

The only reason you might get another full service this year is if you’ve driven 50k+ km which I assume is not the case.

So would I be better off going for a full service then? What price are full service these days (non vw dealer)?

There are wee garages about that are not VW dealers per se, but who mostly work on VW and related cars. Not necessary for just oil change etc but no harm to look for one reasonably local and get your work done there and in future. If you're planning to hold onto it and you should get a good few years out of that yet. Best to ask them and get a quote.

l had a VW Caddy for 10 years , used to do the full service very year ,not in a VW dealer just a small garage , new fuel filter ect every year ,once a year would always buy the diesel additive that cleans the injectors .

l never had an ounce of trouble with it , l had 1 injector go in it ,that was the only problem l ever had with the engine or turbo , it had around 70k on the clock when l bought it and had about 250k when l sold it last year .

Full service from Fast Fit at €240, hopefully the car doesn’t need anything extra. Only got a full service this time last year!

Strange how everyone here is recommending two full services in a row

Replacing your air filter and pollen filter so soon again is a waste of money and will not prolong the life of the engine

The air filter is so easy and cheap to replace it's a no brainer to do it at every service. One of my services there was a massive bunch of dead insects in the air filter, no idea how they got there as I don't park around trees/hedges.

Oil change intervals are designed to make your engine last until it's out of guarantee. A better oil change intervals is 10k miles or every 6 months, change the oil filter yearly. Engines serviced at this interval can last significantly longer and it is the single piece of advice that an experienced mechanic will give to ensure trouble free driving.

My VW T4 gets this service and is at 207k miles and has had falling emissions at the DOE every year since I got it.

When you consider the price of fuel, this is small beer in the bigger scheme of things.

I would also consider doing a gearbox oil change every time you change the timing belt.

Talking of gearbox oil changes,I changed the gearbox oil in my car at 80,000kms and could'nt believe how gray and rubbish it was.Replaced with new g/box oil and while the car didnt feel any different it gave me piece of mind, took 90 mins from start to finish and the oil was cheap in Halfords.

Car manufacturers only have an interest in your car making it to the end of its guarantee. Take their advice with a pinch of salt.

Yeah, if your doing it yourself. OP is most likely being charged €50 for parts & labour to replace a filter that doesn’t need changing

He's hardly getting changed €50 for the air filter when his quote was €240 in total .

Pollen filters aren't normally included in a service as far as l know unless it's requested ,I doubt his pollen filter will be changed .

The sands of time must have eroded your senses as everyone knows even washing your car makes the engine run smoother 😁

OP, check the service section in the owners manual.

Usually full service is every two years but a full service doesn't include certain things so best to check the book.

Its a 1.4 petrol. An oil & filter change should only be €140 to €160 from an independent mechanic. So an additional €50 sounds about right for an air filter supplied & fitted. Otherwise they would be getting charged over €200 for the oil & filter alone which sounds expensive to me.
