    Who'd be on it?

I think it's 4 heads so mine would be

James Connolly, Luke Kelly, Michael Collins and Sinead O'Connor

  • I just can’t see us ever doing something like that. We don’t really seem to revere people quite in that very formal way.

It’s a lot more personal. If you think about any of the greats of Irish history, we tend to retell their stories. The statues we put up also tend to be rather artistic and metaphoric and capturing expression and emotion.

There definitely isn’t any sense of idealising former office holders. It’s a bit tacky to something.

Wouldn’t last more than a few month and between the graffiti and the scangers knocking lumps out of everything, a nose would disappear

I'm not asking for heads to be carved into Ben Bulbin

    It's a rhetorical question

I hope we'd leave it alone. Carving heads into cliff faces is like that tourist marking the Colosseum to impress his girlfriend.

    Great thread idea OP.

Katie Taylor, Micheal Collins, Bobby Sands, Joey Dunlop and Jack Charlton.

Amnesty International’s new investigation shows that Israel imposes a system of oppression and domination against Palestinians across all areas under its control: in Israel and the OPT, and against Palestinian refugees, in order to benefit Jewish Israelis. This amounts to apartheid as prohibited in international law.

Carved on the side of Ben Bulben I'd have:

    1. Obviously Bono. Ireland's greatest and most famous person. In many ways, he is Ireland, so it might seem a bit odd carving himself out of himself, but that's the kind of like Jesus becoming bread and being eaten by his flock.
    2. Laura Whitmore. She represents modern Ireland and our aspirations: sexy, international and care-free. Ireland is the real Love Island.
    3. Rachel Allen. Ireland is obviously world-renowned for our cuisine, and who better to represent us in the kitchen than Ireland's top MILF.
    4. Michelle Smith de Bruin. To this day, our top Olympian, a sportsperson of unblemished and unsurpassed success

On reflection, think of the tourist dollars if we put JFK, Reagan, Obama and Biden on it.

It would be four English lads, a constant reminder of our colonial past and the inability to scrub that from our mind or our landscape.

You do realise that Mt Rushmore is in Black Hills which are are sacred to the Lakota Sioux. It's the height of insult to them that this is an eternal reminder of their defeat by colonisation.

Ireland is the famed land of Saints & Scholars, of ancient Myth & legends. Exquisite poetry, music, literature are what has made our land a cultural gem through the ages. If we are to create our own Cnoc Rushmore we should celebrate our celtic poetic character appropriately with representations of the heads of such titans of our beloved culture.

    I vote Boyzone.

Yes, but do we have accurate evidence of what these real or imagined lads looked like? ie portrait paintings or photographed?

Knowing Ireland we would end up with Jedward, Zig and Zag and Dustin the turkey.

And it’d be 4 times the budget and 3 years late.

Which is very much the international experience.

The American one is still not finished. And there seems to be an open ended budget.

"After Gutzon Borglum died in March 1941, his son Lincoln took over as leader of the construction project. Each president was originally to be depicted from head to waist, but lack of funding forced construction to end on October 31, 1941.

The sculpture at Mount Rushmore is built on land that was illegally taken from the Sioux Nation in the 1870s. The Sioux continue to demand return of the land, and in 1980 the US Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians that the taking of the Black Hills required just compensation, and awarded the tribe $102 million. The Sioux have refused the money, which has grown per interest to over a billion dollars, and demand the return of the land. This conflict continues, leading some critics of the monument to refer to it as a "Shrine of Hypocrisy".

Lots of good names mentioned here.

All I do know is it would takes years of planning before constructions would ever take place.

    Construction would overrun.

It would cost several €100 million extra than expected.
