    Hi there

asking question for my wife as shes not a member here.

shes recent qualified as a primary school teacher.

last year she subbed in a school as an NQT teacher, and has recently been offered a one year fixed year contract in that same school.

Does anyone know what pay scale she will be starting on (ie does the years subbing make any difference?)

    TIA

It depends how much subbing she did really.

I don't know exactly how it works for primary school in terms of hours, but in secondary it's something like 600 (or more) hours over the course of the year counts as 1 point on the scale. If she did full hours for the year then it will count as a point on the scale and she would go onto point 2 this year. It's impossible to say without the details.

Tell her to get onto payroll to request a pay scale review. Even if she's done enough subbing to move up a scale, it tends not to move up automatically so she'll need to liaise with payroll.

Once you qualify as a teacher you start on pay scale 1 and move up to pay scale 2 after 182 days worked (the same as a full school year) whether subbing or on a fixed term or permanent contract, then after another 182 days you move up to level 3 etc. If your wife subbed for the full school year last year she will be starting the new year on pay scale 2. If she didn't sub for the full year then her days subbing will still count and between the subbing days last year and her new fixed term job your wife will move up to level 2 during this year once she reaches 182 days worked. If it doesn't say pay scale 2 on her payslip at this point, contact payroll.
