Adding a name to the Vehicle Registration

I'd like to get my wife's name added to the Vehicle Registration Certificate for our car in addition to mine.

Can this be done and how do I go about it? Is there a specific section on the Change of Vehicle ownership to cover this?

Would this have any impact on anything else related to the car? My wife is already a named driver on the insurance policy.

Cannot be done. It can only have one registered keeper at a time, you can change it but it adds another owner to the vehicle every time you do it the same as selling the car.

If your doing it for insurance purposes then most people just rotate the main policy holder every 2 years between husband and wife for both to keep their NCB irrespective of which of you is the registered keeper. Insurance companies don't generally distinguish a husband or wife as main driver/named driver on the policy as you both have an insurable interest in the same vehicle. Spouses only rotate because your NCB expires 2 years after the main driver's last insurance policy expires.

I presume it is to reflect the joint ownership of the vehicle.

One issue would be if a summons is to issue to the registered owner. I was told that if a summons issues to e.g. John and Mary Ryan it is invalid.

We go abroad to my wife's family every summer. They recently introduced a parking permit in that area. If her name was on the Vehicle Reg Cert we'd automatically get a permit for our car. But since it's in my name we can't get a permit and have to pay for a daily ticket.

Transfer the ownership to her then. You both have an insurable interest in the car anyway so this should not be an issue. Only thing that may cause you to think twice on this would be the extra owner on the VRC but that would make no difference in the grand scheme of things.

If you change the name to your wife's name, it counts as another owner, if that's not an issue, then change it to her name.
