    Hi all,

I have a 2010 mercedes c class blue efficiency. The timing chain is starting to rattle and obviously I need it looked at. Is there any recommendations for a merc specialist or someone who deals with mercs regularly? I know the engine might have to come out but unfortunately that's where I am. Midlands area or slightly west would suit. If anyone has any details I'd would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Assuming its petrol, the chain is at the front and easily accessible, there's no need to remove the engine. It just a matter of removing the tensioner splitting the chain and joining a new one and rotating the engine. However on my own I had to replace both cam gears and their pricey. There's a chap on dungdeal in lucan advertising he specialises in these. I don't know him, but the job doesn't need any special tools or knowledge. I did my own in the back garden.

If its just the chain there's no need for an engine out on the diesel. Handy enough job. If you need to go any deeper though there's no room to manoeuvre. More than likely a new chain and tensioner kit should be enough. If the cam gears are worn it will be obvious once the rocker is off. One of the main problems with the merc is nobody wants to touch them as if they're made of something magical. In reality they're the same as any other car.

Wow those cam gears were in a right state, how much KMs roughly had they done. Fair play for tackling the job yourself

I Don't know if the original owner had it done before or not, but more than likely. It came into our family as a low miler from our local main mercedes dealer but when I cleared all the faults after doing the job, the scanner showed a quick trip to the moon and back. The cam gears seem to last somewhere between 120,000km to 180,000. My odometer showed 180,0000km but the ecu showed 290,000km.
