Miles, miles and miles of tailbacks on every road coming from the east & headford rd going into Galway today for a football match in Sathill st 3pm. Traffic started before 1pm.

Add the tourists and regular sunday shopping & sathill prom and bearna & spiddal beaches, its nuts today.

Any reason this match cant be played in Tuam, Castlebar, Athlone or somewhere logistically better for traffic management. I think its crazy clogging up the city, having a venue in a western suburb (Sathill), when 99% of spectators are coming from the east side, having to cross the whole city.

No. There is no reason. Except GAA.

I'm told a reason is the size of the venue.

So it’s ok to send the traffic to those towns? 🤔🤔

Tuam and Athlone have motorways leading into them. Galway city becomes a total bottle neck when every road is jammed trying to get across to the west.

A GAA pitch in the east (green field site) with motorwar access and proper parking is needed. It would also be ideal for concerts, with the noise well away from residents.

Sathill stadium sale would easily pay for it.

I always have thought that a stadium with a roof located at the airport site, shared by Galway GAA, Galway United and Connacht Rugby would be a great addition to the city. Also could be used for concerts and events. Sadly though it'll never happen

Because Salthill Knocknacarra wont give up the stadium, simple as that, it makes lots of money for them

That is the biggest crowd in Pearse Stadium in about 10 years. Galway had a home game and that is only venue that could accommodate the crowd. It is not the GAAs fault where venue is. Same issues are experienced for Aviva and 3 Arena if you try to drive by car there.

Salthill Knocknacarra GAA do not own Pearse Stadium.

I can not see Galway GAA building a new Stadium in the next 20 years but agree there should be one on East Side of City.

    99% ha ha.

7 of the starting 15 players are playing for clubs West of the Corrib.

If every GAA Club ran buses. Seems like a no-brainer, if every club ran 1/2 Coaches for both Hurling and Football matches it would make a big difference for traffic, Galway Utd do it for the away games.

Athenry would be a good spot for a NEW Stadium in the future
