Calling non weird stuff weird is dishonest.

As is saying noticing re-reg accounts is weird or whatever.

As is misrepresenting what people say.

Some people get off on being disingenuous. 😊

I have come across multiple reregs in last few months.

And they are just the obvious ones who did it for dishonest purposes. The real number much higher.

Or are we talking about credible threats?

If Emmet seriously thought that "deranged oddballs" were going to "turn up on his doorstep" and were a credible threat to him and his family would he not have called the guards? Surely that's what any rational person would do?

But, no, Emmet changed his Boards signature to protect them. I'll admit I don't understand the mechanisms of how this works and Emmet has declined to explain.

Did you report these threats to "the Bekind mob"? Did you report me for "being complicit"? Do you think I hold a grudge and harbour death fantasies against posters who disagree with me on Boards?

I suggest your bring these concerns to the attention of the guards.

And give your head a wobble too.

I was referring to the "numerous" comments using violent language, the murder fantasies, on another site. Two were offered. Yes of course it's awful language - I would ban, and I would be freaked seeing it said about me, but there's no point in exaggerating the amount of it, and of pretending - as an anonymous member - to feel threatened offline along with one's family.

Perhaps not but... the thread is about changes in boards over time.

    One example:

A poster reregd specifically to abuse and threaten violence to moderator and posters on a specific forum.

In all likelihood they were a coward and it was all mouth at their humiliation.

But... not the kinda people Id want to chance a boards meetup for.

I don't know if we're talking about the same things, Odyssey - people re-registering to cause trouble is never good.

I'm just talking about one matter involving a good deal of exaggeration.

Reddit is more global than Boards, it has a broader range of topics, including some that aren't allowed here like porn etc.

The upvote system allows users to curate a subreddit that reflects their views and drown out any dissenting opinion.

    You're comparing apples and oranges.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Ha! That's nothing compared to the abusive PMs I used to receive when I modded CA and Covid!

But yeah, people do weird things on the internet, one time we organised a boards beers for a particular forum and a user who had issues with one of the mods of the forum reregged when they found out the mod was going and threatened to fight them at the venue. Now, on this occasion I attended said beers and can confirm said mouthpiece did not turn up but you can see how it would... Dissuade a new poster from attending.

And theres also the numerous accounts miraculously resurrected with no posts for several years... to parrot similar Russian propaganda talking points or de jure conspiracy theories.

They never pop up to talk about the latest Star Trek series or where they can find parking in Dublin.

Thats a factor in the current state of Boards.

Again, this is back to the hostility another poster mentioned earlier. it’s uncalled for.

Why would I be contacting the guards ?

Why should I “give my head a wobble”.

The example posted here when the poster was asked was pretty extreme and toxic. . Even more so that the conversation was about people not there so it was pure negative backbiting at best. Not something that should be condoned in any way.

Poster would not be the only one creeped out by that kind of stuff.

Absolutely. Kinda like my anonymity after my , only one I agree, bad experience.

I wouldn't be so quick to brush off that type of aggression and abuse of anyone else either, online or anywhere.

Over the years I've got a few abusive messages, not many mind. Can't say I've ever taken them particularly seriously.

But I could see how it could play on your mind if you were attending something like a boards beers - even though, as Necro alluded to, I'd be quite doubtful that the type that goes out of their way to be abusive would be the type to actually attend these things in person.

I don’t know why you persist with this lie that I only posted “one example.”

Scroll up, I posted two. One where someone said that he wanted the “bekind mob” killed and buried in a lime pit, and another where someone said that they wanted to slit my throat.

Having said that Arghus, there was one person who listed all of us off an another forum after being banned.

Think boards is still useful for answers and often helpful answers to a variety of issues.

Don’t think it’s possible to have a reasonable debate on certain topical issues of the day, without pile ons from campaigning individuals or groups. There is usually little room for even moderate alternative views on these. And many of same are quick to use reporting as a tactic. But this is what it is and deliberately done.

I.don't think it matters whether the abusive and threatening messages or posts are actually credible, it just puts posters off, why would you stay as part of a discussion if you're getting terrible abuse?

The ones I was talking about were on another forum, and if you read the thread they are not serious.

They're definitely not something that would prompt me to change my Boards' signature.

That's to be expected when it was stated in a Feedback thread that mods respond to reported posts as they don't read all threads. They can't be expected to read all threads, but the report function is open to abuse.

It used to be much better for finding answers when there was a facility "search this forum", for example in DIY etc.

Since the upgrade the search function is very poor.

In fairness, I’ve been here since 2003 under a different guise. Was never banned.

I used to use this site years ago, but have long since stopped. I occasionally pop on to look at the accommodation/property threads but only out of frustration as I don’t know anywhere else with similar discussion related to an Irish context. I don’t contribute as I find the modding too Orwellian on those threads, you can’t discuss basic realities without being banned.

overall I agree with the general consensus which is that things have moved on, this used to be the hub of the Irish tech community but in reality things have gotten more globalised and I tend to hang out on hacker news now, everything has more of an American flavour..

Theres one or two unholy trinities of lads/lasses (I think all lads tbh) most likely in a WhatsApp group or two (or one person in a few guises) who would argue blue is red and purple is green, and call an earthquake a sensory illusion, if ya get my gist, but seem to have relatively free rein to sometimes act as absolute dicks, and have had signatures clearly intended to troll users. Some of these guys manipulate threads in such a way as to get them shut down.
