Boy Racers as a culture or hobby

Having been up in Letterkenny over the weekend when the rally was on. I was intrigued by the cars the rally fans had.

What stood out was the noise. What is it about the noise they seem to favour from their exhausts ?

Also the phenomenon of lowering cars. What is that about?

I know very little about what makes boy (and girl) racers tick.

Anyone here part of that culture here that could explain a bit about it?

loud exhausts were bad enough back in the day, but it's the loud screecingee/whoosinge type sound that really annoys me, nowadays :grrr: think it happens when change gears(?)

I live in an area where they congregate at night and it drives me nuts, so much so that I hope they will have a bad accident and that will stop it

I hope so. The noise is ridiculous imo. Often underpowered engines making a lot of noise. I find it a very strange scene.

I went up to Donegal to a relatives house a few years ago and we went to the pub.

They were so proud of being crazy drivers. Various different things i heard up there "We drive our cars hard here". "We arent road pussies in these parts". "Cars are meant to be driven to the limit". And a few kids were killed in a car there only a couple of months before.

driven hard as long as they are heading towards the border so can’t be followed. Found the drivers in south west and north west Donegal to be perfectly normal anytime I was up there. Ridiculous amount of reg plates with dodgy fonts though. And all ages with them.

As for boy racers, it’s all just plumage and rebellion. Noisy/go fast/I’m dangerous/I’ve 20 grand to buy an altezza/diffing at remote crossroads on the dead of night.

Happened up my way a good few years back. The main road was plagued by a few lads. One night one of them lost control and slammed into a garden wall. Passenger killed. Driver spent time in Mountjoy. That's when that nonesense stopped.

That’s probably why. Exposure to excess of noise, like noisy exhausts causes mental and physical health problems.

Imagine living next to that. Or in flat in a rural town, these yokes going up and down the street all night.

There is a reason they are regulated. But these knuckle draggers just think that the authorities are ‘out to get them’ and ruin their good time.

It sounds very realistic. One really must be a basement dweller to doubt the real life experience of other posters.

Donegal people on one hand complain about being cut off from the rest of the country, forgotten about, no railways, bad roads etc...while at the same time a general lawless, anti-authority, nod-wink culture seems to prevail, where giving two fingers to the law is applauded.

Aggressive driving is not only tolerated, but celebrated amongst young males, not just in Donegal. It seems to be almost mainstream up there.

One of these loud boy racer cars used drive in and out of our housing estate 10/15 years ago waking up babies etc with the noise.

One morning Boy Racer came out to his car windows smashed up & he got the message and sold it on to some other numpty!

It can be annoying for sure just like a lot of other issues people get annoyed about. I'd love to ban airplanes if I lived near an airport, ban motorbikes, ban law mowers (only allowed between 2pm and 4pm!!), ban slurry spreading, ban dogs, ban trains, ban large sporting events and concerts, etc, etc. Why? Cause they annoy the shite out of me and that's all that matters to me

Nobody really cares if someone wants to drive a yellow car with side skirts and spoilers lowered to a level that makes it difficult to get over speed bumps. They’ve been doing that for years.

The problem arises when they put these very noisy exhausts in. Now it becomes a noise pollution issue. Driving in loops around towns up and down the country sometimes until 3 or 4 in the morning at weekends.

I'm guessing that the insurance cover in force on these cars is voidable. Insurers won't offer cover on modded cars it seems and therefore the mods aren't declared.

Most modern rally cars ,the WRC ones are electric now, very little noise. why these "boy racers " insist on noise beats me ,like going to watch the Tour De France and bringing you Raleigh chopper to show off !!.

As for dump valves ,on a bloody Bora about 20 years old and small engine and lowered so much they cant use some roads because of speed bumps fools, although not really bothered by them, not my money. Remember being passed by a Golf with dump valve and lowered to ground level going into Kilkenny and around corner a huge plume of smoke and engine gone at side of road .

It’s not that I’ve never experienced them. I hear the exhausts go up and down the railway bridge beside my house. I just haven’t experienced what must be the constant drone of them all day every day to bother people to the extent that they notice it enough to make complaints about it.

I was never into the boy racer stuff, drove a Pug 406 HDi when the lads all had civics, lol. But now I'm a bit sad the scene is dying.

Going by the latest thread's on here all the young ones want to drive Tesla's and can't figure out how to drive a manual. The future for motor enthusiasm doesn't look bright I'm afraid.

I have no problem with people pursuing their interests. Why should I?

However, what I can't stand is when those interests directly interfere with me trying to enjoy my life. For example, those gormless people with broken exhaust pipes that you can hear for miles around. I don't really care if people want to aimlessly drive around - but not with loud exhausts that wake people up in the night, or go tearing past when trying to concentrate on work from home.

Even through the covid lockdowns when I was trying to work (and most people) were staying at home, a motorbike was doing laps of the parish with loud/broken exhaust. It was like torture.

to add to the list of 'i was in donegal...' stories, i was in carndonagh for the first time in years last year. it was astounding the shithousery going on at night in the town with cars, the sheer level of noise, the total disregard for anyone who lives in the town. and notably, the total lack of gardai.

at least golfers golf away from the general public. etc.; the issue here seems to be with people who use public roads for their adolescent and frequently dangerous peacocking.

Nope. They are petrol hybrids with 1.6l petrol engines. They make quite a lot of noise too.
