Hi. Hope this type of message is OK. I'd also like to preface this with I'm not really much of a car person and so don't know much about much. So please feel free to assume I'm stupid.

We are currently looking at an Audi Q4 e-tron. Looking at the price and our budget, alour options are likely to either be a 2023 Q4 35 sport back or a 2021 or 2022 Q4 40. Factoring in the grant the 35 comes in at circa €55k and the second hand 40 is in the range of €49k to €50k.

My main concern with the 35 is whether the lower range might impact resale value. For our likely use cases I don't see this being a major issue (mostly trips to lidl with a 200km + drive probably 1-2 times a year) and so I don't see this being a huge issue for us. That said, looking online the 35s seem to be holding value well for now at least.

So will my heart says a new car will be better than second hand I'm wondering if the sensible thing to do would be to get the 40 second hand?

If I had to have a Q4, I’d go year old 40 and save a few quid. The 35 has fairly poor range for the money and it’s even slower than the 40, which isn’t a rocket itself.

You mention a 2021 car, just be aware it will be out of warranty soon, except for the battery.

However, since you're open to getting a used car you could look at the bigger etron 2020/2021, much nicer interior and more power. The 50 models are now available for 40k, although they'd be similar range to the etron q4 35.

I don’t think there’s much value in a 21/22 Q4 at €49K-€50K unless they’re loaded with kit that you want. Be careful with trim levels on a Q4, the lower trim levels with cloth seats have low rent interiors. More VW Polo than Audi.

If you can get something thats depreciated a bit already and has a bigger battery then its a no brainer

We looked at one (but S-Line so a bit pricier than 40k). We were concerned that it seems to have depreciated a bit harder than the q4s appear to be doing, and so by the time we go to sell in 3 years time it might not hold much value as a 6 year old EV, and maybe more niche market give its size and more luxury positioning?

Are you saying that there might be cheaper q4s or that we should look for something else?

Doesn't appear to be any meaningful options below that price - especially in the q40 40.

I'm definitely open to alternatives but other half wants something that feels like a premium car. We have looked at other brands like VW, Toyota/Lexus but they only one they liked was BMW which was even more expensive!

Maybe consider an Enyaq with full leather as they have quite a premium feel interior and seem well built. Unlikely to be much cheaper than a Q4 though.

35 Q4 Sline here. Great car but software is such a let down. If you’re going for one make very sure it has 3.2 firmware and don’t be fobbed off by the dealership.

Range is fine for my use cases and plenty of comfort and premium feel in the sline.

no regrets so far while others are now starting to catch my eye.
