    Qualified for the Europa League

    Spurs, Man Utd

    Qualified for the Conference League

    Chelsea

That means that Newcastle don't qualify for European competition now, and won't have to adhere to the stricter FFP rules that UEFA impose than the PL do. Chelsea will though.

Won’t the European money they’ll lose out on just make it a net deficit anyway?

I think if they'd gotten into Europe, even with that extra bit of European money (not all that much below the CL), they'd still actually be more limited in spending than they will now be.

Interesting, any estimates to how many million extra they’ll be able to spend, and if it will just come to bite them when they get back into Europe again later?

The PL 'allow' a loss of £105m (~€122m) over 3 years before a club gets punished. UEFA 'allow' a much lower loss of €60m over 3 years.

UEFA also will not allow those rule-bending sales of club assets to itself.

But won’t any losses they incur this year just end up affecting the 2 following years calculations anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,894 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

My understanding is that if they want to compete in UEFA competition in 24/25, then the 3 year period under review would be 21/22, 22/23 & 23/24. I could be wrong there but that's the way I think it is.

They've already admitted to, and paid a €10m fine for, "incomplete financial reporting" in 2023 so they might get a bigger punishment next time.

If ETH is kept on, it shows you the mind set of soem owners. It's amazing how one game can make 38 games irrelevant.

I don't know if there was a thread for the FA cup. I didn't see any of it but United fans must be delighted. It's great to win the FA cup but to beat City and have the whole of the UK and Ireland, outside of City fans, celebrating your win makes it a very, very special day.

Alex Ferguson was getting sacked if he didn't win the FA cup in 1990. United finished below mid-table in the league that season.

good win for Utd yesterday but just saw the first goal. Oh my God Gvardiol. What was he at? It appeared as if he looked right at Ortega before he headed the ball? Probably took something mad like to happen to give them a helping hand and stand a chance. But Utd can be solid when they try and play that lying deep, counter attacking football. The problem with it is that it’s not effective against the majority of teams that come to OT and lie back as well. Did De Bruyne get injured or was he just taken off?

I love football as much as the next man but what a strange turn of phrase to suggest that people in Ireland were somehow just as invested in the game as those in the host county it was played.

Talk about trying to grasp at tenuous straws. Explains why football is the way it is here.

    I'm sure some were.

    I'm sure some weren't.

Not a big deal either way tbh.

    It was just unusual phrasing.

If the poster said the whole of the UK and Norway were rooting for United it would be just as bizarre. As though Norwegians were somehow uniquely invested in the match moreso than anywhere else in the planet outside of the UK.

Good to see a team take on City and win. No mention of charges or cheating by Utd just trying to beat a better team on the pitch which they did.
The teams that moan are beaten before it starts

Maybe because we are in Ireland, he mentioned Ireland?

Going by Eagle Eyes recent posts, and general posting style it was in line with what I'd expect tbh.

Is your point that City losing a once off cup game invalidates concern over an ill gotten dominance that just saw them win 9 straight games to seal their 6th title in 7 years?

Two seasons. 3 finals and 2 trophies. Players love him bar the wasters. Be silly to get rid. Although I guess we will find out in a day or two.

I was more responding to the downplaying of charges against City on the basis of them losing the cup.

For ETH, letting him go is the right move imo based on the totality of the season. Lowest ever points total in the PL (first ever negative goal difference) and a shambolic effort in the CL. More than that though, consistently poor performances and statistical views around shots conceded that hugely call into question the tactical acumen at play.

You say ‘only the wasters’ in the squad don’t like him and maybe that’s true - but there have been issues there with more than one player. Finally you have the players he seems to be recruiting / requesting be recruited and there are fair questions there.

Winning a League Cup and an FA Cup should not be the summit of Utd’s ambitions. Can ETH win a league or a European Cup? I suggest we got a very strong feedback loop this season which says that won’t happen. Let’s see if INEOS agree.

A cup win, full of lucky results, papering over the cracks of a terrible European run and the worst ever PL league season, meaning that ETH stays in the role?

Whatever the new owners do with Ten Hag though they have to find serious money to invest in that team. Where exactly are Utd well covered? They need 2 CBs, at least one full back, couple of centre mids, back up or an extra striker, and maybe another wide forward. A few windows will be needed to get them sorted.

Yeah I left out the words football or soccer fans. Most people would get what I meant though, after all this is the soccer forum.

For Tuchel it will. Anyone who fails to win a league with Bayern isn't good enough. Obvious why Bayern wanted ETH now.

That's the problem. Getting rid after one bad league campaign. By your logic, Arsenal should have sacked Areta.

This is the crux of my argument for keeping him. It was undeniably a bad season and yet Utd won the main domestic cup beating 2 of 3 best teams in the country along the way. That bad season would be the peak of most managers careers, especially true for some of the names being linked with replacing him.

Opposition fans can make jokes all they want but the truth is in 2 seasons in the job ETH has won both domestic cups and had a top 4 finish. Either Utd show some faith or they'll be back here in 12, 18 or 24 months again debating replacing ETHs replacement

    Welcome back Southampton.

Is that not what ETH has demonstrated over the last 3 games? He's reverted to using the 4 2 2 2 formation.

So you'd have sacked Alex Ferguson in 1990. That's not a question it's a statement based on your post.

Won the FA cup but only finished 13th in the league after finishing 11th the year before and winning nothing.

He was given another year, runner-up in the league and won the cup winners cup followed by another runner-up finish in the league the year after and then the first of many league titles in the first year of the new Premier league.

So, obviously the people upstairs knew something we didn't. If ETH gets another year then maybe they know something we don't.
