EV suggestions for a daily driver

    Hi.

Looking for suggestions here and a sanity check

A friend of mine is currently driving a 07 Toyota avensis petrol and does a Galway to Limerick commute 5 days a week is costing him circa 100 euro a week.

I suggested an Ev would save him money on that. His budget is tight at 22k max, less if he can.

I suggested a Hyundai ioniq 38kw would do that route without issue even in winter. The fuel saving would likely balance out the repayments and still leave him with a much newer car.

He isn't mad into tech and just wants something that will take him to and from work without charging publicly. He can charge at home.

I discounted the leaf due to chademo charging limiting him on the rare longer trips. They do have a petrol second car so maybe it would work.

    Thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

A perfect canditate for an EV.

What's the actual distance? Looks about 200km city to city. A bit tight for a Leaf in the coldest, wildest winter weather. Many cars would be suitable, as you suggested the Ioniq 38; also Kona, Niro and for a little more Model 3. Well worth taking a loan, savings would be real if only home charging on a good rate.

Distance from abrp is about 140km. lookks like its motorway mostly.

I have asked him to record the milage and costs for a week to see.

I wouldn't be wasting hard earned on older yokes like Ioniq38,Kona

VW are doing scrappage and 0% interest on 2023 models, that 07 avensis will get the €4,500 scrappage and the money saved on petrol will cover loan payments.

    Posted by another user below.

VW have a glut of new 52kw ID4's to sell, so smaller battery, smaller range etc.

Some garages are offering them with extra discounts, scrapage incentives etc for €39,990 and here the sweetener - 0% interest on PCP

So for example I was quoted the following sample repayments, scrapping my 16yr old, for €4,500,

    Deposit Monthly repayment Term

    10,500 €149 36 months

    7,500 €285 36 months

    5,000 €354 36 months

Check out Carzone/Donedeal etc. Divanes VW in Castleisland / Tralee are advertising this on Carzone - you'll find a grey 2023 ID 4 priced at 39,950 and look at detail of how they are making this offer. They confirmed to me that this offer is available on the Pure range which is the 54kw battery entry level range

140km is reachable even in Ioniq28 if you are OK to slow down in middle of winter to around 100kmh - that would save him few 000s over I38. It is also good car for longer journey as it can recharge very fast.

I was thinking of something with a good bit to spare range if that makes sense, it will be his first ev so doing that would avoid range anxiety on his normal run.

I switched to EV and did not delay when I realized every week I delayed was another week I wasted money on fuel and depreciation of the car would be less than fuel savings.

First questions does he own his own hone and have off street parking so he can get a home charger?

Does he have cash or need a loan, can he get loan etc.

Factor in the lian and do basic sums as to weekly savings based on estimates.

There are some 50kW chargers on that limerick to cork road (see plugshare app) , but they all have been unreliable lately so definitely something that can do it in winter on home charging is needed.

Possibly the 38kWh ioniq is a bit obsolete and outdated by now but if you buy right it might be cheap motoring with low depreciation. It charges in public relatively slow compared to older model.

A 60kWh+ car would be better particularly if your friend has only access to one car and needs to drive to Dublin airport etc from time to time.

Do the sums and estimated depreciation and it should help decide what makes sense. Try test drive cars properly from dealers or private sellers to see which car type he likes.

    Thanks @zg3409

I have sent him the link to this discussion so hopefully he will have a read and go from there.

A commute like that will surely put up way too many miles for PCP finance unless you’re 100% sure you’re going to buy out the car after 36mths?

Kona64 is what is required, will get 400kms in this weather and right on Budget, yes it is a small car but has been a commuter range King for a long time, will still have lots of warranty too via private sale

Hyundai KONA 2019 - Long range - 64Kwh for sale in Co. Louth for €22,500 on DoneDeal

Good recommendation slave 1. OH has that model, really happy with it. That possibly also has a replaced battery in 2021/22.

Exact same here, herself has it, just a super commuter car and always has longer range versus my Tesla M3 RWD

Tell him to take a look at the various MGs as well. I've had my ZS about a year now and very happy with it. A friend has ordered the MG4 which he should be getting in the next few weeks.
