Probation after Open Competition (same grade)

    Hi folks,

    I know a current civil servant (AO general) placed on a specialist AO panel. They are looking at the move in the hope of a more interesting role / better department.

    Does anyone know if they will have to redo their probation on taking a new role?

    According to my reading, the civil service only has probation for new entrants or on promotion. The position for moving to an analogous grade is not clear.

    No you'll be at the same point in your probation if you're still on and if you're not then you'll not have to go through it again

    One of the advantages of internal mobility is that you dont have to go through probation again. Regardless of previous civil service roles, probation period is required for all open competition applicants. Our manager always made that clear when open competitions came around.

    That agrees with my own experience. Open is probation regardless.

    Quick question on this. If someone moves on an open competition to a different department in the same role, the point at the scale you are is kept or you start from the start? They cannot reduce your salary even if you're on probation again?

    I asked to different people within the Civil Service and received different responses.

    CO and EO have credit arrangements in place for prior service. If you move at same grade you'd be keeping existing pay if roles deemed analogous.

    We had someone move into our division recently coming from AO general to AO specialist (IGEES). Their increment date and salary remained exactly the as if they had stayed in their previous role.

    I'd guess a combination of a petty manager and lazy staff/not clocking in/not on time/ excessive sick leave...

    Not my experience. Was an existing established EO in one department, almost 5 years service. Was successful in an open EO specialist competition and moved to another department. HR mentioned probation and my AP stepped in and queried this. They checked with Peoplepoint and it was confirmed that I did not have to complete probation again for the same grade. My advice would be to confirm this with Peoplepoint and FORSA. I'm almost 10 years in the service now and one piece of advice I would give is this, just because a manager says something with confidence, it doesn't always mean that it's true. If in doubt, always seek written confirmation from another source.
