Penalty points on the way for illegal parking?

"Furthermore, it has been recommended that parking in a cycle lane, bus lane, or on a footpath should be considered as “parking in a dangerous position” and see a motorist given a fine and three penalty points on their licence."

Could this finally be enforcement for illegal parking? Just think of the money saved on maintinance of footpaths. It may also be possible for kids to walk and cycle to school safely. Is it too good to be true?

While the idea is good, I guarantee this will be too much for Gardai to handle, outsourced to a third party like speed vans and just cost us money somehow.

I hope there's some form of input required to enter in a reg and time of day to make sure people aren't uploading clips from cheap Amazon cameras that aren't legibile or blurry pictures taken while passing to save them going through tons of useless footage. At least foot paths are illegal to park on full stop. Bike lanes aren't always in operation which is a different story.

I don't bother with Traffic Watch because it doesn't go anywhere and the effort involved in making a statement and putting footage onto a CD is too much effort for smaller issues that are rampant.

Every day without fail I see someone in the bus lane, running red lights or undertaking and running stop signs. I would happily spend 5-10 minutes getting clips from my dashcam while at work to report all of this.

I won't be expecting much enforcement when I regularly see Gardai illegally parked to pop into Centra for a breakfast roll.

So the citizens can do the Gardas job for them ? Sorry, won’t be participating…

also what if footage is incomplete, doctored ?

it’s about as dumb an idea quite frankly.

it encourages people to use phones and cameras when operating their vehicles too…

I do agree with the illegal parking points though… it’s an epidemic now. So much worse in the last few years. Lots more two car families and households and here people are partly blocking gates, parking on corners, footpaths….

    Garda cars park illegal everywhere.

All they'll get is pictures of their own cars and others being vindictive.

Maybe if the legislation applied to Garda cars.

I think you’ll find they’re not illegally parked.

We are good at making new laws to replace old laws that we never enforced. There is zero enforcement of road traffic laws in this country, what makes you think that making a new law will change that?

It's already illegal to park in a cycle lane and we already have dangerous parking laws. It's also illegal to run red lights, follow too close, overtake on sold white lines, ride an escooter in public etc so what other new laws can we bring in to fix all the illegal things that are done on our roads?

What we need is enforcement of our current laws. If we still have issues then bring in laws to close loop holes. But new laws, to be ignored like the old laws, is always the solution!
