Why do they all move as if on a boat when hit by torpedos or the likes?

Do the Inertial dampers only work on ocassion?

Apart from the obvious 'tool to show dramatic effect', I think the inertia dampers can only do so much to mitigate an impact/turbulence. Especially so with unexpected things like weapon fire, there's little time for the system to compensate for any movement.

Inertia Dambers do not stop the ship from moving around. They just stop the people on the ship from getting squashed at light speed. No idea quiet how but that's how I understand it.

They're dampers not eliminators so they probably don't compensate completely like Inviere wrote. The real question is why "inertial dampers offline" isn't met by horrified looks on the crews' faces as the next hit turns them into paste on the bulkhead.
