Here's how character switching in Spider-Man 2 works

"When you're playing the main story, we control when you switch between Pete and Miles... it's done in service to the story when we're making those switches, for sure," Spider-Man 2's creative director Bryan Intihar told Eurogamer in an exclusive interview. "So, as you saw on that gameplay reveal, which is a segment of the main story, we are pre-determining those based on what we want to do for how the story plays out."

Map Size

"We've added Queens and Brooklyn this time, so roughly speaking the map size is about two times larger than the previous titles," Intihar said. "Since these two areas are somewhat smaller and residential, I think you'll find them different from Manhattan. We've prepared some unexpected situations we haven't done before, like a battle on the river between two of the cities, so I hope you'll look forward to them."

• Players can freely switch between Peter and Miles in the open world at the press of a button.
• Players, however, cannot switch between Peter and Miles during story segments as they wish. Rather, the switch is pre-determined by Insomniac to better serve the narrative.
• In the open world:
  • There is content designed for Peter
  • There is content designed for Miles &
  • There is content that can be played as either Peter or Miles.
• Playable spaces confirmed as of 3rd June 2023:
  • Manhattan (seen in the gameplay demo)
  • Queens (seen in the gameplay demo and confirmed through interviews with Famitsu & Press Start)
  • Brooklyn (confirmed through interviews with Famitsu & Press Start)
  • The East River (seen in the gameplay demo and confirmed by the PlayStation Blog).
• The map is said to be roughly two times the size of the map found in Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales.
• There will be no dynamic day/night cycle in the game.
• 3 skill trees will be available - One for Peter, one for Miles, and one shared between them.
• New traversal methods revealed as of 3rd June 2023 are the:
  • super slingshots (present in different areas of the world) &
  • web wings.
    • Wind tunnels available around the city will help gain massive bursts of speed when using the web wings.
• In terms of combat,
  • A parry system has been introduced (PlayStation Blog)
  • An array of special moves are accessible through the L1 button.
    • Some of the moves available to Miles are 'Thunder Burst' and 'Chain Lightning' (PlayStation Blog)
    • Some of the moves available to Black Suit Spider-Man (Peter) are 'Symbiote Punch' and 'Symbiote Strike' (IGN)
    • These moves have a cooldown before they can be used again (as seen in the gameplay demo).
  • Situational environmental finishing animations are now available.
  • The ability to dodge under enemies while in the air.
  • The ability to web-yank enemies from side to side.
  • An air knockdown ability (where an enemy is knocked to the ground and bounces back upwards).
• In terms of stealth,
  • Dual takedowns have been introduced.
• In terms of gadgets,
  • New gadgets confirmed as of 3rd June 2023:
    • Web line
    • Web grabber
  • The traditional gadget wheel was seemingly absent when Miles switches gadgets in the gameplay demo (whether it is no longer present in the game is currently unknown).
  • It looks like some gadgets will be shared between Peter and Miles such as the Web grabber (as seen in the gameplay demo).
• There will be gameplay abilities that will become available to players thanks to the Black Suit that wasn't available before.
• Players are able to approach encounters "with stealth or fists of fury or both". Regardless of the approach used, there will be new gadgets and abilities that will help complement different playstyles. (PlayStation Blog)
• Peter's new finishers when he dons the Black Suit "are much more aggressive and borderline brutal" (IGN)
• Similar to how Peter is able to access a new assortment of abilities due to the Black Suit, Miles too will have access to new abilities thanks to his newfound blue bio-electric powers.

Probably should get around to playing Miles at some point. Tried replaying the game from the start again, with the new update, but couldn't get into it again. Might just go back and try Miles. It'll be a quality game either way, just hope bigger doesn't mean worse!

The arachknight costume is actual from the Infinity Wars event series where marvel characters were warped together. Arachknight is where spider-man was merged with moon knight

I'm yet to play Miles Morales, but playing Insomniac's Spider-Man on the ps4 really got me nostalgic for that awesome Spider-Man 2 game back on the ps2, and I mean that as a compliment!

There's a really nice easter egg connection between the PS2 and the PS4 game relating to Felica Hardy/ Black Cat. If you listen closely to the music theme for Black Cat on both games, you'll hear a shared jaunty theme underlying the music.

They changed Peter to look more like Tom Holland. Horrible decision imo, it made Peter look so much younger that it was harder to believe he's been Spider-Manning for a while. Don't know if they've changed MJ, maybe it is just the hair that's throwing it. The weird thing is compared to the first game, she looks older while Peter looks younger.

Say what you will about their games and design philosophy, but Insomniac are putting virtually every other AAA studio out there to shame with their extraordinarily well optimised and performative games. Just excellent, smooth performance and visual quality with few cutbacks, and plenty of options too. Obviously have to wait to see if this holds up, but they have a superb record so far.
