Black Mould In Apartment

hello

so recently my Bathroom has developed black mould on 3 walls due to the steam of the shower , i rent my apartment through Dublin City Council , my question is , is it my responsibility to clean this my self or should i ask DCC to get the mould removed ?

does the extractor work? See if it is working by testing if it holds up a tissue paper. If it doesnt work, clean it. If that doesnt work, get a plumber or electrician

Why didnt you wipe the mold off the walls as soon as you saw the first dots of it. Thats the only way to stop it getting out of control. Zap it as soon as it appears.

Other than that open the windows. Get a dehumidifier. But clean any you see appearing immediately. Just bleach and water will do the job. No need for any fancy cleaning products.

DCC rentals are under different rules to regular tenancies. The are less responsible for maintenance. This however is basic cleaning and use. As said the extractor fan may be not working or underpowered, very easy to fix and not expensive. You will still need to clean it yourself.

Vinegar is actually better than bleach, as it can kill the mold at the root.

I'd say you are much more likely to be injured by a car, in a car, human, alcohol, sugar, mobile phone and social media addiction than by black mold in the bathroom.

Clean it down yourself at first sign and ventilate. Another reason why landlords are running away from renting property!

Is vinegar better than bleach?

Bleach would be better but vinegar is probably considered more eco friendly. The bleach will remove most of the staining from the black mould without as much scrubbing.

In general you need to get more air into the apartment in general. This mean when you can open windows, make sure any wall/window vents are left open. Turn on extractor fan in kitchen when cooking.

Regards the Bathroom

(1) IS your extractor fan working if it is turn it on

(2) If it is clean it if not get it fixed

(3) mould spray above is excellent but needs to keep on top of cleaning

(4) reduce length of showers or during summer turn down the heat
