Got a new clutch in a 2007 car last November but now it is slipping, hard to get in gear, garage man said I need new clutch again, is that normal in the space of 6 months when I don't drive long journeys so mileage since clutch and service is low

It may be the way you are driving it

I would ask what type of car do you drive and are you getting a burnt smell from engine compartment?

Are you sounding like a plane ready for take off at 3500 rpm and not taking your foot of the clutch.

Be surprised many cant get their foot off the clutch pedal and rest it there.

No burn smell, Hyundai, I usually take off slow

So if your driving at 50mph and you want to overtake your rpm goes up but not forward motion.

If pedal was feeling funny hydraulics causes issues and brake fluid level drops.

It can be tough getting into gear even when clutch fully on floor and once it locked could not get in any gear so had to stop re start the car

Is your clutch pedal have resistance in it or feeling different.

If clutch was worn you can still select gears.

If pressure plate broke you would have issues selecting gears.

Check brake fluid level to see if it has dropped

Did you have a new full clutch kit installed or just the clutch replaced?

If the clutch is not slipping (revs rising without acceleration or forward motion when in gear), then the inability to select a gear along with the pedal feel you describe, sounds like a faulty slave cylinder to me. Cost to repair would depend on whether the slave is internal or external to the gearbox.

More than likely the master and slave cylinders werent changed with the clutch the first time it was done.

I always used to fit both when doing a clutch on a those.

Id say the slave has failed but Id still do both now especially if the clutch is ok on inspection.

One way to check if the clutch is slipping, apply the handbrake, but it into 1st gear, then slowly lift your foot off the clutch. If the clutch is slipping, then the engine will continue running, if the clutch is good ( and the handbrake good also) the engine will cut out. With modern cars, if its the clutch slave or master cylinder is gone, then you may not be able to select a gear, or in some cars, even start the engine because the clutch pedal has to be depressed. If you happen to be on the side of the road and this happens, its a tow/breakdown wagon job. I know this because I had one last Saturday, 2011 Passat 1.6 tdi. Caused by the fluid not being changed, and damaged the seals in the slave cylinder.
