Faulty extension reel - retailer wont replace

Bought a 25m extension reel from Woodies about 8 months ago and it has failed. Looks like the thermal cut-out switch has burned out. Woodies wont take it without a receipt (which im not surprised about) but the manufacturer, Masterplug, wont look at it either. They also say that I need a receipt in case I “took it off the back of a lorry”.

Anyone else encountered this with faulty tools? Am I out of luck?

Manufacturer also telling me they wont SELL me a replacement part as they only sell to retail!!!

Masterplug supply to multiple outlets (channels) so they require their reseller to validate the sale before offering a replacement product under warranty. That's not unusual and it is on you to provide a proof of purchase (such as a receipt or statement otherwise) showing the value of the purchase.

Why would you expect to be entertained by anyone without a receipt? Seems an unreasonable expectation tbh.

I paid by card. I have the transaction on my bank account.

I don’t expect the retailer to assist me without a receipt, however, as the manufacturer, masterplug are the only producer of this specific item in the world. They offer 5 years warranty on the item as states in the product itself, and have been selling this particular line for less than 5 years.

I fail to see why a receipt is relevant. They produced an item, I bought it in good faith and it failed before expected lifespan of an item of this nature, so they should repair or replace.

The concept of requiring a receipt is fine for retails but for manufacturers it is a nonsense to fob people off. They bet on most people not keeping a receipt (which I did but lost in a house move unfortunately) to wash their hands.

Ultimate , if they refuse to assist it’s on me for not having the receipt, but to have access to spare parts and refuse to sell to me is pretty low in my opinion.

If you paid by card then the retailer might be able to find the transaction on their system.

go back to the store you bought it in with the statement and see if they can do something for you

A warranty is offered on top of your statutory rights. They offer this warranty according to their terms and conditions. If a receipt /proof of purchase is part of the terms and conditions then they are the terms of the warranty. Even if you want to go to small claims court to enforce your statutory rights, you will require proof of purchase.

Your contract is with the retailers & not the manufacturer
