Can alarm sensors be tricked by burglars using a strong magnet from outside?

If they can what’s the point of having an alarm system. I know motion detectors are installed also but they aren’t always turned on.

No, it's not realistic that a magnet applied on the exterior will prevent a magnetic contact from working. The reason is that the changing magnetic field of the larger magnet over the smaller one will most likely trigger the reed switch within the sensor. Additionally the magnetic contact is supposed to be installed where it's not visible from outside, so any nefarious person would not exactly know where the contact and wiring is even if they wanted to try use a large magnet.
