I am talking to a guy re selling my car. He is asking for photos of the log book and chassis number. Do I need to provide this? He said it is fir an insurance quote. He is young if that makes a difference. I met him and his dad, they seemed like decent people, not out to scam me. Am I being over cautious?

The only thing he needs for an insurance quote is the reg number.

not sure why he’d need the chassis number, though it’s visible to all anyway isn’t it?

There is a scam in the UK where buyers request a photo of the log book and use that to change the vehicle into their own name and they lift it off the street with a transporter and then claim it’s ‘their’ car.

Don’t know if that is possible here though.

Give them the reg, tell them they don’t need the VIN. They could just be genuinely mistaken thinking that they need it.

He is also asking for a photo of my name on the log book as proof of ownership. This has my address on it so I'm not sending it but I'm starting to get suspicious.

He might be very cautious and want your name on the logbook to confirm it is in your name and the vin number to run a vehicle check.

Buying a car private is a stressful risky business for some people.

I know if I'm buying a car private I'd go to view the car note vin number , run a vehicle check, meet the owner at their property and ask to see ID to confirm they are who they claim to be and they own the car on paper. If the seller doesn't agree I walk away , plenty other cars to buy. There are alot of scammers out there selling stuff.

I think he is just being cautious and getting everything checked before handing over money. I am being cautious on the other side, concerned that I may hand over too much information and leave myself vulnerable to some kind of fraud. I don't sell many cars so I don't have enough experience in what is acceptable to request and what could be used against me in some way. As you said, there are a lot of scammers out there.

Under no circumstances do you give this information.

My sister had the same thing when she was selling her Golf.

She had contact by email. They wanted log book and chassis numbers, which they would have used ti legitimise a stolen car, which they already have. A ringer.

have you met the buyer already OP or just phone or email contact.

Edited: sorry see you have met them and they seem ok!

I still would not give photos of log book. They don’t need it.

He might be able to purchase a new key with all this info on log book from the main dealers and drive it away. I know what I would tell him to do

He wouldnt be able to drive it away - it would have to be paired to the car with (usually) main dealer diagnostic equipment.

Could probably buy a key but its useless without being programmed to the car.

Personally I wouldnt send a picture of the log book - he has no need for it at all.

VIN- No issues - I can get a Vin in less than 5 minutes from a reg number.

He's looking to do a history check. Just doesn't want to insult you.

Most people take photos of the logbook after signing it anyway. VIN can be gotten from a history check. I don’t think he could do much with a logbook number and VIN anyway. Just tell him he can check everything out when he’s in front of you with the cash. You’s are both just being overly cautious while will end up cancelling the sale

A history check can be done with the reg number.Buyer can view the logbook in person when looking at the car-not take photos unless cash handed over.Take his photo,if he runs then you run too

OP be very cautious. Caveat Venditor “let the seller beware".
